L'agent de la police Montée Canadienne, Benton Fraser part à la recherche de l''assassin de son père. Cette recherche le mène à Chicago, une grande ville américaine bien différente des territoires du Nord-Ouest du Canada où il travaillait en solitaire, habitué à la chasse aux caribous et à la politesse de ses compatriotes... Avec le détective Ray Vecchio, extraverti et trop bavard et Difenbaker, son loup sourd et apprivoisé, ils forment une équipe hors norme et partagent la même soif de justice.

Ray tries to carry Fraser out of the woods, and the two cops still have to catch the felon, while dealing with the ghosts of their two fathers.

Fraser decides to go along with this ruse, all the while utilizing a variety of detection techniques (fingerprints, dental imprints, etc.) as he tries to unravel who the mysterious person is who now answers to the name Ray Vecchio. Along the way, Ray's house is torched (Fraser rescues both Frannie and her perpetually unemployed brother-in-law, Tony, but the goldfish befalls a foul fate when Diefenbaker eats him).
