The plot centres on three characters, each of whom are the focus of one episode. In the first, Bob (Bryan Dick), a waiter who wants to be a writer, falls in love with a prostitute, Jenny (Zoë Tapper): but this leads him into a downward spiral of drinking and spending his hard-earned savings.

The plot centres on three characters, each of whom are the focus of one episode. The third is Ella's story (Sally Hawkins), a barmaid who we see in the first part as being quietly in love with Bob. She is torn when an older and wealthy man persues her affections.
