In 2020, as the Movement for Black Lives grew in the wake of the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and others, The Help experienced a resurgence in popularity, becoming one of the most-streamed movies on Netflix. The 2011 film about a white woman confronting racism may be well-intentioned, but—like Green Book, The Blind Side, and other White Savior movies before it—The Help centers its story on benevolent white characters, rather than on firsthand black perspectives. The “angry young man” trope came onto the scene as a working class anti-hero but has recently morphed into a social villain. In the 50s to the 70s, British angry young men like Look Back in Anger's Jimmy Porter (Richard Burton), Saturday Night and Sunday Morning's Arthur Seaton (Albert Finney) and Clockwork Orange's Alex (Malcolm McDowell) challenged the upper-class focus of cinema. Over the years iconic angry young men around the globe played by Robert De Niro, Amitabh Bachchan, Spike Lee, Edward Norton and more became voices of disruptive political protest -- some listened to and validated more than others. Teen movies like She’s All That, Ten Things I Hate About You, American Pie, Bring It On, and Varsity Blues created an instant familiarity with their audience by tapping into known plot points and tropes, like the pressures of prom, the cruelty of popular mean girls, the sensitivity of social outcasts, angst about cliques, and a strange number of secret bets and financial arrangements. Between 1998 and 2002, there was a sudden boom in a genre that studios (and audiences) shunned for most of the ‘90s. But in these few short years, filmmakers pushed the teen-movie genre to such a self-aware, formulaic place that they nearly killed off the teen movie entirely. Ultimately, this genre’s self-reflective frenzy and near-death in the early 2000s helped pave the way for more original and less trope-based versions of the teen story. Here’s our Take on how this era showed that comic self-awareness isn’t the same as actual critique, and how the turn-of-the-millennium teen formula indirectly led to more nuanced teen comedies today. The Magical Minority trope has been widely condemned for its racist undertones and problematic takeaways -- yet to this day it’s strangely difficult to get rid of. It involves a person of color existing in a film or TV show seemingly just to serve the heroic endeavors of the white protagonist. The Magical Minority uses a special “gift” they possess, whether it's mystical connection to the supernatural, hyper-intelligence in a specific area, or an exceptional talent. Thus she can serve as a kind of emotional “scapegoat” allowing viewers to excuse her male partner’s blatantly irresponsible behavior. Increasingly, stories from the nag’s perspective explore how she’s often an overstretched wife and mom juggling a lot and carrying an intense mental load, while feeling let down by a partner who’s not committing the same effort or showing her due respect.
