Londres, 1850. Iris peint des poupées pour gagner sa vie aux côtés de sa sœur jumelle, Rose, et rêve de devenir une artiste. La nuit, elle se peint secrètement nue. Silas est un taxidermiste qui possède une boutique remplie de ses créations. Louis est un peintre, membre de la Fraternité préraphaélite, à la recherche de sa prochaine muse. Lorsqu'Iris rencontre Silas, puis Louis, elle se voit offrir la possibilité de s'échapper de sa condition sociale et de commencer une nouvelle vie.
