It turns out she was killed before the ransom note was even delivered. Harry visits the scene where a young woman, Dawn, has died in three inches of water in a paddling pool, and her expensive necklace has disappeared. The team start to suspect the two women have been killed by the same person. Could there be a serial killer on the loose? Dawn's sister contacts the police. The expensive necklace has been found in her daughter's toy box. Harry realises that there has been no murder, the death was just a tragic accident. Meanwhile Nikki is determined to track down the murderer of Lucy Philips, even if she has to come face to face with the murderer himself.

Terriblement jaloux de la relation que Richard entretenait avec Shana, le petit ami de celle-ci a décidé de se débarrasser d'eux. Choquée par le racisme de Ryan, Nikki décide de le laisser tomber. Alors que Leo termine ses quelques heures de travaux d'intérêts généraux, AJ doit faire face à une recrudescence de recrutement des gangs parmi les jeunes adolescents.

Harry doit assister l'inspecteur McKenzie lors de l'identification d'Yitzak Rubutkin, un jeune juif hassidique, dont la femme est la nièce du rabbin Marouski. Des preuves précédentes suggèrent que le crime est antisémite. Le principal suspect est Drozdz, un sans-papiers polonais connu pour avoir des penchants nazis, qui a été filmé agressant la victime. Mais l'heure du crime et celle de l'agression ne correspondent pas. Harry apprend par Chaim, un ami de la victime, qu'Yitzak était gay. Le mobile du meurtre est donc peut-être là. Leo assiste Jenny Bright lors de son enquête sur la mort d'une étudiante, décédée lors d'une fête chez des expatriés australiens. Les preuves démontrent que la jeune fille a été violée par Danny Land, le propriétaire de l'appartement. L'homme avait déjà été condamné pour de précédentes violences sexuelles

Les analyses prouvent que Chaim a été violemment projeté devant un camion, qui l'a tué sur le coup. Le rabbin avoue aux enquêteurs qu'Yitzak et Chaim entretenaient une relation homosexuelle. La synagogue, une nouvelle fois prise à parti, est recouverte de slogans antisémites. L'ADN de Binyomin, le fils du rabbin, est retrouvé sur le cadavre de Toni, l'un des travailleurs polonais qui harcelaient les juifs. Harry veut l'arrêter mais le rabbin et sa femme lui dévoilent enfin la vérité. Toni est en réalité leur fils aîné. Son comportement violent et psychotique les a forcés à le renier et à quitter Manchester pour Londres, en l'abandonnant. Embrigadé par des sympathisants nazis, Toni a tué les deux jeunes hommes. Margo, la soeur d'Edie, a tenté de se suicider. Elle avoue qu'Edie a eu une overdose après l'avoir surprise en plein ébat amoureux avec le petit ami de celle-ci. Suite à des révélations faites longtemps auparavant par un jeune élève (ce même Francis, selon Nikki), Noel Hopkins est arrêté. Faute de preuves, Noel est relâché. Le directeur de l'établissement scolaire est licencié et sa maison incendiée. Il est sauvé par Danny, le père de Michael, le garçon décédé. Francis était en réalité obsédé par Michael. Quant au jeune Liam, il n'avait jamais existé. Les deux garçons avaient été les victimes d'un réseau de pédophiles. Nikki aide Noel à surmonter ces accusations et à regagner son poste.

Depuis des années, Carmody mène plusieurs vies et tue les personnes qui le percent à jour. De son côté, Harry continue d'examiner le passé de ses parents et fait une découverte sur la personnalité de son père.
