Kantarô, un jeune ethnologue, rêve depuis tout petit de réveiller le Tengu, Dévoreur de démons pour prouver aux humains que les Yôkai (démons pacifiques) existent ainsi que les Oni (démons mauvais). Il y parvient et lui donne le nom d'Haruka (les yôkai nommés par les humains deviennent leurs compagnons). Avec lui ainsi que Yôko (une yôkai renard) et Suzu (une fille d'environ 12 ans amoureuse d'Haruka), ils vont au devant d'aventures pour exorciser les différents Oni de la région.
