The reality TV show which took the US by storm finally arrived in the UK in May 2001. Sixteen contestants were marooned on the island of Pulau Tiga, for a month of scheming and bitching. Despite low ratings, ITV comissioned a second series. The second series of Survivor was set on a group of Islands off the coast of Panama. The number of contestants was reduced to only twelve, so that viewers got to know them better. The contestants were split up and put onto either North Island or South Island. The format of the game is simple - the two tribes follow a three day cycle. On the first day, they compete in a Reward Challenge - and the tribe who wins will get something to make their lives on the island a little bit easier. On the second day, they will take part in an Immunity Challenge - and the tribe who loses will be taken to Tribal Council on the third day, to vote so that someone will leave the game

Épisode 1 - Episode 1

21 mai 2001

In the first ever episode of Survivor, 16 contestants prepare for the experience of a lifetime. Before they jump off the boat and row to the island of Pulau Tiga, they are split into two tribes: ""Helang"", meaning Eagle, in which Jayne, JJ, Adrian, Uzma, Andy, Simon, Charlotte, and James were put into and ""Ular"", meaning Snake, in which Eve, Jackie, Mick, Zoe, Pete, Richard, Sarah and Nick were put into. Once Ular have arrived at the island, Nick shows himself out to be a leader, and Richard and Jackie make a secret alliance, vowing to keep it all the way through. Meanwhile, Helang member JJ can't seem to hold her tongue. After one more day of settling in, it's the first Immunity Challenge. Whichever tribe loses the challenge will be taken to Tribal Council to vote somebody off. There has already been bitching by some Helang members about Jayne, and hints of alliances over on Ular Beach. Surely Tribal Council will solve at least one tribe's problems... The challenge is simple. They must

As a new day dawns, Jackie cannot believe that her fellow Ular members decided to vote off the natural leader Nick rather than her, but is still worried that she will be next. On Helang Beach, Andy says that he is glad that JJ is playing the leadership role, rather than himself - this means that he will not stick out in the tribe, which should mean that he won't be voted off. At the first Reward Challenge, a few faces looked like they just wanted to go home! Each contestant must eat a maggot like creature. Once everyone has had their ""dinner"", Mark Austin announces another twist. Each tribe must nominate the most squeamish member of the opposite tribe, and Jackie and Uzma were chosen. They had to eat two grubs without water and the first to swallow won. Jackie swallows first, and Ular are presented with strawberries and ice cream. The next day, Helang's hunger pains result in them eating a dead rat, but some disgusted tribe members say that they'd rather die than eat a rat. At the Immu

It's now been a week on Survivor island, and the split on Helang Beach between the younger and older members is becoming more apparent - with Charlotte reluctant to be bullied by the older members. But, Ular seems to be united, with no obvious splits in the tribe. The morning's Reward Challenge is more of a test of the tribes' organisation. Each member has to put on a T shirt, which has a letter printed on it. Then, they must stand on a log and organise themselves to spell out as many words as possible. Ular wins - and they are presented with the equipment to catch and kill fish, as well as tins of food. This leaves Andy unhappy, as he says that some of his fellow tribe-mates seem to have came for a holiday. The next day, Helang discuss what they are doing wrong, and they decide to be strong, united and organised for the Immunity Challenge. But, when it comes to Immunity Challenge, Helang's promises don't prove to be enough to win. The two tribes must swim out to sea, and drag a treasu

Torrential rain leaves the tribes discontented, soaking everything, and bringing the rats into Ular's shelter. Meanwhile, it hits Helang that they have lost four challenges in a row - they must win this one to prove themselves. The older members discuss voting off Charlotte next, to get rid of the youths, and to progress in the game themselves. Meanwhile, Zoe is beginning to get on Eve's nerves, on Ular beach. At the Reward Challenge, Helang are determined to win. The challenge is this: A square maze has been set up on a pivot, and the tribes must gather round the maze on their turn, and guide a ball around to the end of the maze, without it falling into any of the holes. The tribe who gets the ball the furthest wins. On their second attempt, Helang get a winning 21 points, and they are presented with three chickens, to do with what they wish. (It was Andy's job to kill the chickens). The next day, Helang's Adrian and Jayne continue to irritate each other. Jayne says that he is lazy an

The weather worsens, and there is a lot of tension on Ular Beach, with Eve furious after being tricked by Richard and Jackie. Eve announces that she is not going to bother to pretend to be friends with Jackie any more. Helang share what they would be normally doing on a Saturday morning, and Jayne is disgusted at Adrian's confession that he would use his mobile from his bed to ring his Mum, to ask for some breakfast. At the Reward Challenge, they must dive into the sea to gather letters, and form words. Helang ends up as the winner, and they win Alphabet Spaghetti, beer and chocolate. Charlotte is delighted by the chocolate, and the rest of the tribe worries that she will eat it all herself! A jealous Ular rename Charlotte ""Bikini Babe"". The next day, a tiring Immunity Challenge followed. Each tribe had to pick five members to run certain parts of an assault course. Helang end up getting to the end first, but Mark Austin informs the tribes that Helang's James had made a mistake - he ha

Feeling that the Survivors thought that their life on the island was in too much of a routine, the production team decided to wake them up a 5 AM to take part in the Reward Challenge. Their challenge was to pretend that they wanted to get off the island, and construct a distress signal on their beaches, using whatever they could find. Adrian was reluctant to get involved, saying that the challenge was ""stupid"". Andy told the cameras that he wasn't prepared to ""carry Adrian any longer"" and he also had things to say about Charlotte, as he said that she will express her opinions whether or not they are useful or not. Ular were more organised, as usual, and their distress signal was coming along nicely. Helang's Charlotte was getting tired of running around in the blazing sun, and started to feel faint. Adrian spent the whole morning doing nothing, with his hands on his hips. The Reward Challenge was judged by an expert, who flew over both beaches with Mark Austin. It was decided that Ular

It's the day that Helang have been dreading - Tribal Merger. They have guessed that their chances of winning £1 million have gone, as they highly suspect that they will be voted off one by one, by Ular members. Before the tribes merge, Helang and Ular go to visit each other's beaches, in order to see where they would rather stay. Helang are extremely impressed with Ular's beach, and Ular say that Helang's beach is a complete pig sty, and refuse to stay there. Once the beaches have been inspected, the tribes both meet Mark Austin, where they must vote for where they want to stay. They all decide that they would rather stay on the former Ular beach. Mark tells them all to burn their old tribal colours - now they will be known as Sekutu - meaning ""merged"" or ""joined"". Mark Austin then gives them some bad news - their beaches have been dismantled, and instead of a Reward Challenge, they must build a new shelter for Sekutu to stay. Once the shelter is built, Sekutu spend most of the day tal

The tribes have been merged for four days, and Charlotte begins to miss home. She knows that she has no chance of winning, so she can't see the point in staying. Meanwhile, Eve starts to get annoyed at the amount of rice that is being cooked, saying that they won't have enough left to survive the remaining days if they continue. As old tribal loyalties still lie, ex-Ular members are making life as difficult as possible for the old Helang members. Eve and Charlotte finally clash over the rice, and Andy points out that Ular aren't being very bright, considering that the Jury, who will decide the winner, will be made up of some Helang members. At the Reward Challenge, the Survivors must dive into the sea, and stay down there as long as possible. The person who stays down the longest, will win the Reward. It's Andy who is the winner, and he is told that his Reward is a night of luxury that you would expect at a Five Star Hotel. He is also allowed to take someone from Sekutu with him, and h

On their first morning without Andy, Sekutu are still split. The old Ular tribe only have 2 more members of Helang to get rid of, and are still not being any nicer. Eve moans that the tribe has run around doing things for Charlotte and James, while they have been sat around doing nothing. Meanwhile, Charlotte has things to say herself about Eve, promising that she will do her best to make sure that Eve does not win the million. That morning's Reward Challenge made some mouths water. First of all, they had to throw darts at a target, and win money for their throws. With the Survivors having varying amounts of money, Mark Austin says that an auction will take place for food. Jackie suggests not outbidding each other, because this will mean that they will all be able to share the food when they get back to camp. Unfortunately, the Survivors change their mind when they see the pizzas and chocolate on offer, and they all begin to outbid each other. Zoe bids for, and wins, a short phone call

Pete continues to suffer. His weight means that he is not getting as much food as he should do, but Eve is continually annoyed by him saying this, adamant that the rations should be equal. Charlotte is also suffering from the lack of food. So, arrangements are made for the morning's Reward Challenge to be for food. The Survivors had to run races across beams suspended over the sea. Eve and Pete make the final of the challenge, and it is Pete who finally wins. His reward is a full English breakfast, which he is sure that he will enjoy on the following day. The next morning, while Pete has his reward, the others wonder whether he will give up his rice ration for the day. At the Immunity Challenge, it's the most important one so far for Charlotte, who must win in order to stay on the Island. The challenge is to dive into the sea, where there are 25 treasure chests - one containing an idol. The Survivor who get the idol wins Immunity. Richard is the lucky winner, so he cannot be voted off

The worst storm yet falls overnight, and the tribe wakes up commenting on the fact that it is more than a coincidence that on the night that Pete was stabbed in the back, they experience the worst storm yet. Jackie wonders whether she should use her new friendship with Charlotte to form a new alliance. She is aware of the bad feeling towards her, mostly coming from Eve, and she wants to get her own back. At the Reward Challenge, all of the Survivors are given short video clips of their families. Mark Austin announces that they will be competing for the chance to watch their own video in full. The challenge is to take part in a short assault course, and the person who got through first won the reward. Richard is the winner, but he decides to hand over the reward to Charlotte, because she seems to be missing home the most. Whether this was just a kind act, or a plan to get Charlotte's jury vote is unknown. Richard and Jackie decide to form an alliance with Charlotte, who is happy to join

Charlotte tells the cameras that after the previous night's Tribal Council, that Eve started to argue with Jackie, calling her names. Eve doesn't seem to like it when the vote doesn't go her way. She is feeling extremely vunerable now that her alliance has collapsed, and she says that she cannot stand three of the four people who she has been left with (the one who she does like being Mick). The tribe notices that a considerable amount of rice has gone missing, which leads to some suspicion among Sekutu. When the tomato ketchup goes missing, it's the last straw. When Eve is out of the way, the rest of Sekutu search through Eve's bag, finding the missing ketchup. The morning's Reward Challenge was another one about food. The tribe had to look in a mirror and guess how much weight that they had lost since arriving at Pulau Tiga. The contestant who is closest with the guess will win a huge chocolate cake. Eve ends up as the winner, and for once, Sekutu are united as they share the cake. T

With the £1 million getting ever closer, the next two days will be slightly different. There will be two Immunity Challenges and two Tribal Councils. Eve is still on the minds of the remaining four, as they still cannot believe the way that she behaved in the past few days. Mick is convinced that he will be leaving, since he put himself in the wrong alliance, and that only a miracle will help him now. Would this miracle come in the form of Immunity? The Immunity Challenge was an orienteering race. This is one of Mick's hobbies - is this his miracle? Obviously not, as he and Charlotte both head off in the wrong direction. Richard finally won. Richard finally tells Mick about him letting Pete in on the secret of Episode 10's vote. Jackie says that it will be a ""sad day for young and old when Mick leaves the island"". Mick later tells the others about where he managed to hide the sausages that he smuggled in. At Tribal Council, where Eve had taken her place at the Jury, after a few questio

Épisode 14 - The Final

25 juillet 2001

In this live final episode of Survivor, the contestants reunite, with Jackie and Charlotte backstage. Mark Austin and John Leslie talk to the contestants, where all is revealed - Mick stole the rice in order to spread suspicion among his former tribemates. In between the interviews, we see Jackie and Charlotte's last night and day on the island, as they ponder on who will win the cash prize. The two women write their speeches to the Jury - the speech that could secure a £1 million prize. At Tribal Council, they both spoke to the Jury, both trying to convince the members that they were more deserving of the prize than the other. After the speeches, the Jury members had the chance to question the two contestants. Questions included, how they would spend the money, whether they felt that they deserved to be winners, and if they regretted any of their actions that led them to win £1 million. Then, back in the studio, we were shown the votes from the Jury.

Épisode 15 - The Reunion

Épisode 1 - Panama: Episode 1

13 mars 2002

Survivor is back, and this time the location is a group of islands off the coast of Panama. ITV is definately hoping for this series to bring in high ratings. This year, there are 12 contestants instead of 16, it has been scheduled in a later time slot, and the producers have hopefully planned some surprises. In this episode, we are introduced to the new contestants, and we are told that they will be split up and put onto North Island or South Island. North Island consists of Drew, Dave, Meeta, Tayfun, Helen and Alastair. South Island consists of Jonny, John, Susannah, Lee, Bridget and Sarah. One of these contestants will end up walking away with a £1 million prize and earn the title of Ultimate Survivor.

Épisode 2 - Panama: Episode 2

20 mars 2002

As life on the islands go on without Sarah, two contestants have secrets that they don't want their tribes to find out about. North's John is keeping his past as a marine a secret. Meanwhile, North's Alastair is keeping a similar secret - he used to be a RAF Survival Combat Officer, and he also wants to keep this from his tribe. And Lee worries that Susannah isn't as faithful to their alliance as he first thought. Tree mail gives the tribes news of their first Reward Challenge - this leads Tayfun to think that they will be rescuing one of their tribe using a canoe. But, after Tayfun accidentally lost their machete, North Tribe don't think he's an expert at the game, and near enough ignore him. Before the challenge, with Lee out of the way for a while, Susannah hints to John and Jonny that she would rather be in an alliance with them than Lee. As the tribes gather at Salt Creek for their challenge, it seems that Tayfun's interpretation of their tree mail is correct. Both tribes have to

Meanwhile, on North Island, Tayfun is becoming increasingly isolated from the rest of his tribe. The Reward Challenge is simple. Inside two treasure chests are blocks of ice. The tribes have to get the ice to melt, without smashing it, to get out a flag. The first tribe to raise the flag wins. South's Jonny took the ice into the sea to melt it, which proved effective, and South won the challenge. They were rewarded with a leg of lamb, a diver's knife, flippers, a snorkel and goggles. The next day, the high seas cause trouble for North Tribe, as they threaten to destroy their camp. Dave is continually annoyed by the fact that Tayfun does not help out around the camp as much as himself and Alistair do. Meanwhile, on South Island, Bridget tells the cameras that they must win this Immunity Challenge, because their tribe could not cope with losing another member. Meeta finally tel

So far, the only times when North and South have been together have been together has been on the boat, and when competing against each other. This is about to change. Both tribes have to nominate one of their own to go over to the opposite island to find out as much as possible. The two ""ambassadors"" will then be quizzed on the other tribe. North's Helen volunteers herself to go over, and South decide that Susannah is the best at remembering things. They are both soon flown over to the other tribe by helicopter. The contestants thoroughly enjoy themselves with the camera, which takes their mind off the worries of the upcoming merger. But, talk soon turns to the opposite tribes. South's Jonny jokes about North's Helen - saying that she would blow the prize money on buying a house for her mother. South Tribe also agree that Dave would spend the money on several Newcastle United season tickets. As dawn breaks the next day, it is time for North and South tribes to pack up and leave their islands. They will never stay at these islands again for the rest of Survivor. Drew is the winner, but later admits that it was all down to luck. Her reward is a tin of food, sleeping bag, and dishes & cutlery. After the challenge, the friction between Bridget and ex-North continues. Bridget argues with Drew about how to serve the chicken, leaving the rest of ex-South very concerned. They talk amongst themselves over how Bridget seems to have become a different person since the merger, and it making herself a target. If Bridget is voted off - it is very likely that the rest of ex-South will be voted off one by one by ex-North.
