Épisode 22 - How Villeneuve Uses 'Hands'

17 décembre 2020

Blade Runner 2049 is an incredible film for many reasons, but one thing people seem to overlook is how hands are used to better tell its story. Of course, it goes without saying that many shots of the hands are not REALLY shots of the hands. But these examples are. Forgot to add in clip names for two films included in this video. 'Arrival' and 'Enemy', both by Denis Villeneuve! Épisode 26 - Symbolic Storytelling of The Handmaiden

18 février 2021

Symbols are cool, but they're even cooler if they can be interpreted within the narrative and can stand on their own without being 'metaphorical'. Here's how the legendary South Korean director Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Thirst, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, etc.) uses symbols in his 2016 drama / thriller, The Handmaiden...by not really using them. Épisode 28 - Visual Trauma of Enter the Void

17 mars 2021

I still can't watch this scene without flinching. So imagine the pain of making a video of it. Gaspar Noé's Enter the Void is a 2009 film about a young man who...dies. A visual genius, and in this case, equally great (but underappreciated) sound mix. It may be boring, but it's worth a watch. Épisode 29 - Nomadland | The Secret Behind Its Shots

How could you use the camera to foreshadow and explain the essentials of your film? Here's one of my favourite scenes from Phantom Thread, directed by one of my favourite directors, Paul Thomas Anderson, to explain. Épisode 37 - The Kaufman Hell - I'm Thinking of Ending Things

2 octobre 2021

What is this film REALLY about? What is Kaufman trying to say? That's something we will never know, as Kaufman is infamous for purposefully making things vague and open to interpretation. But that doesn't mean we can't speculate; in fact, we're invited to do so. So let's give it a try. In case people wonder, the main music is mine I created for this video, and it WILL be available on bandcamp / soundcloud soon after this video gets released (also, will start spotify fairly soon). Épisode 44 - Annihilation’s Cosmic Framing

31 mai 2022

Why is Alex Garland's Annihilation so creep and unpleasant, yet beautiful and elegant? What makes it feel so...alien? Well, a lot of it has to do with how the film builds up its cosmic 'off-ness', and at the center of it all is this one shot composition: a frame within a frame shot. Let's take a look. Épisode 47 - Cure | Creating The Scariest Non-Horror Film

31 août 2022

Remember the 'ghost walk' scene of the Japanese horror film, Kairo, directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa? Well, here's a film from him that I think is his best, and the scariest, despite being closer to a mystery thriller than a straight up horror film: Cure. 30 septembre 2022

What makes a film without a single scare, scary? Why is Bong Joon-ho's 2003 crime thriller, Memories of Murder so dark and gloomy, despite its plentiful comedic reliefs and lack of violence? The secret is in its 'colours', or more precisely, the colours that are hidden in plain sight. Let's explore how Bong Joon-ho approaches visual storytelling, and what we can learn from his techniques. Warning: take everything with a grain of salt - lots of fun speculations intended as a means to explore, dissect, and analyze the tricks. Especially for this video, if you'd like my in-depth take on the film, my reasoning behind the argument, and how I came to different conclusions - i.e. no omission, full discussion - become a patron on my patreon page and listen to my monthly podcast, where I dissect my latest video in detail from creation to completion. Épisode 49 - Vertical Storytelling of Park Chan-wook

21 octobre 2022

Decision to Leave in theaters in the US, UK, Canada, and Ireland. In depth video coming soon on my channel; stay tuned! Why let everyone speak, when you can simply move them vertically? Here's an interesting concept found in the legendary South Korean filmmaker, Park Chan-wook's films: every pivotal narrative point, represented by a vertical movement. Of course, this doesn't always apply (nor is it an absolute truth even from the examples I give) but it can be a valuable tool and a concept to think about for our own filmmaking journeys to 'spice up' the scene a little bit, given the right context as explained in the video. Épisode 50 - It Comes At Night | Scarier Than Ghosts

1 novembre 2022

It Comes At Night is one of the most impressively daunting films I've ever watched, and it's not because the film is packed with horrifying images or actions (though it had its fair share); it's because of the camera, and its secret movements. If you didn't find this film scary at all, or were disappointed by its lack of action, I hope this video will help you appreciate it at least a little bit more than before. Yes, it has its flow, and yes, it may be relying too much on the techniques and come across as a slow film with little narrative value. But if you go in without any preconception, and really invest yourself into the world it presents, I guarantee its methods will work better and at least put you on the edge of your seat for awhile. If you can, why not get the best out of its intended optimal viewing experience? Enjoy. Épisode 51 - Darren Aronofsky | The Perspective of Hell

1 décembre 2022

Darren Aronofsky films are not for the faint of heart, but they are a must-watch for anyone interested in films. One thing he does extremely well and concerns himself with the most is the idea of telling a 'subjective story'. As I talk about in the video, subjectivity in films is a concept that have been explored and utilized in many instances, but what Darren does is something else altogether. Let's take a look. Épisode 52 - Decision to Leave | Misdirection Done Right

2 janvier 2023

Known for his intense subject matter and fancy actions sequences, Park Chan-wook's newest film, Decision to Leave is anything but extreme - at least on the surface. This video contains major spoilers for Decision to Leave, which is streaming exclusively on MUBI in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, India and Turkey. Watch it with 30 days free at mubi.com/spikimamovies Park is often misunderstood as a director who prefers style over story; but in my opinion (and he says so too in his interviews), I think his style is always chosen meticulously to serve the story, and if it wouldn't do any good to amplify the theme of the film, he wouldn't unnecessarily use it. The same goes with everything else you often see in his films, including violence and action. While Decision to Leave may seem like an obvious story with blatant symbolism, it functions more like a visual poem that expresses its emotions with its rhythm, colour, tone, images, and sounds. It's a constant clash between complexity and simplicity, clarity and obscurity, mountains and oceans, Hae-jun and Seo-rae... Épisode 53 - Guillermo del Toro is the master of dark fantasy

31 janvier 2023

If you love films, chances are you probably have watched at least one film by Guillermo del Toro, a Mexican filmmaker best known as the master of dark fantasy, mixing reality with fairy tale, violence with beauty, and creatures with humans. But what makes Guillermo del Toro films so fantastical? What tricks are there in his film universe that makes it so unique, yet easy to digest? There are many answers, but one thing I'd like to point out is 'repetition'. Let's take a look at how he uses repetition to craft his one of a kind world, focusing on his 2006 work, Pan's Labyrinth. As mentioned in the video, Gaspar Noe's VORTEX is streaming exclusively on MUBI in Canada and many other countries. Épisode 54 - Perfect Blue | Dissecting The Most Terrifying Animated Film

21 février 2023

Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue is widely considered the best psychological thriller ever made. It certainly gave ME nightmares back in the days, and the best part about it all is that, while it's one terrifying work to watch, it's also an incredibly well made film, and quite beautiful in that regard. While there are, therefore, plenty of dissections and analysis on this masterpiece, I rarely see anyone discussing this one particular scene that completely freaked me out the first time I watched it. Let's take a look at that scene, what makes it so scary, and how it ties to the rest of the film, by looking at the wonderful techniques Satoshi Kon utilizes throughout the film. Rest in peace, Satoshi Kon. /// Music download: http://spikima.wixsite.com/spikima Patreon: http://patreon.com/spikima Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/spikima Instagram: @ spikima Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/spikima?ref_id=26504 Merch 2: https://www.bonfire.com/store/spikima/ Your support helps with keeping the channel running. Thankfully, many did, and many were perplexed before the actual image came up, which is important. (I really thought maybe it's just me). Épisode 55 - The Rise of the K-Zombie Genre

25 mars 2023

Do you hate zombies? Well, so did I, until South Korea came into the scene. In 2016, Train to Busan took the world by the storm with its innovative structure and heartwarming story, essentially reviving the zombie genre that's been walking around for a year too long without a proper revamp. But what did Train to Busan do that's SO different that it changed the entire game? That it's Korean? Actually, yeh. Let's take a look. Note that the points in this video isn't to undermine the quality of non-Korean zombie flicks, but rather to praise what the K-zombie films are doing right; therefore, while some exclusivities indeed exist, many points may apply to non-Korean films as well (and there are also a lot of horrible Korean zombie films in existence at this point as well - so take it mostly as a tribute to Train to Busan) Watch the FULL Train to Busan movie with my reaction, commentaries, and analyses on WeWatch, a creator-powered content streaming service. Épisode 56 - Come and See | Creating The Most Disturbing Film

5 avril 2023

Elem Klimov's 'Come and See' is widely known as one of the most terrifying films ever made. But what exactly makes it such a haunting film? Why does this film affect us the way it does, and is it really just another scary non-horror film? I talked about Kiyoshi Kurosawa's 'Cure' before on my channel; like 'Cure', 'Come and See' is not just another disturbing film. It is a beautifully crafted work of art, and deserves a much better position than a subsidiary of shock cinema. So let's dive into the wonderfully twisted world of 'Come and See' and really, see what it is all about. Épisode 58 - Climax | The Most Anxious Film Ever?

2 juin 2023

Gaspar Noé films are notoriously difficult to watch, and I've covered three of them. Climax (2018), while considered by many of his avid fans as inferior to his other works, are widely known as his most 'anxious' - or should it be 'insane' - film to date, and I do not disagree. But what makes Climax such a nerve-racking experience? Technically, the prize goes to the film's use of 'sounds', especially its diegetic music. But the real secret to Climax's panic-inducing atmosphere is in the film's use of 'anticipation'. Let's take a look at Noé's rollercoaster ride of a film from 2018, and see what tricks he employs to keep you at the edge of your seat. Have you ever looked up in the sky and felt like the stars are going to fall on your head? Or perhaps you've tried Google Earth VR like I did and panicked at the sight of the Sun. Whatever the case, fear of space is a real thing, and it happens to combine the worst parts of megalophobia (fear of big things) and thalassophobia (fear of deep water) - the unknown, the all powerful. And if there is one film that captures that horror the best, it's Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. HIGH LIFE is now streaming on MUBI in Canada, UK, Ireland, Turkey and the Netherlands.
