Sakuraki Hanamichi, avec ses cheveux rouges et son imposante taille (un mètre quatre-vingt dix), débarque dans le lycée de Shohoku, traînant derrière lui son image de mauvais garçon. Il souhaite démarrer la nouvelle année sur de bonnes bases, surtout d'un point de vue sentimental, histoire de mettre fin à la longue série d'échecs amoureux qu'il endure depuis trop longtemps et qui fait l'objet de brimades incessantes. C'est en voyant une autre lycéenne du nom de Haruko Akagi que Sakuragi retrouve espoir. Malheureusement pour lui, elle semble intéressée par un certain Rukawa, un joueur de basket-ball qui la fascine depuis le collège. En effet, Haruko aime le basket et convainc sans mal Sakuragi, avec son physique hors-normes, d'y jouer. Rapidement, notre héros va devoir apprendre toutes les bases de ce sport, afin d'intégrer le club du lycée et montrer à Haruko qu'il vaut mieux que son rival mais non moins coéquipier Rukawa...

Hanamichi's world comes tumbling down again.

Takato seemed to have devised the perfect plan to counter-attack against Sakuragi, which is sending in the extremely small and weak Miyamasu. In an unbelievable turn around, the plan worked in which Sakuragi was horrible embarassed, allowing Kainan to widen the gap. Rukawa however, seems to be heating up.

Due to Fukuda's terrible defense and Sakuragi's equally atrocious offense, Taoka thought it'd be a harmless idea to match Fukuda up with him. However, it seems that the entire gym was in for a surprise as Sakuragi showed off his jumper.

Ryonan's offense was concentrated around Fukuda, who has been constantly defeating Sakuragi. He was forced to sit out, sulking to himself of being beaten fair and square. While Sakuragi was defeated, Shohoku wasn't, as Mitsui's three pointers pulled his team back within range of Ryonan.
