Un héros très improbable, Nelson Nelly Rowe, recherche Jody, sa fille disparue. Une fille qu'il n'a pas vue depuis treize ans - plus de la moitié de sa vie. Nelly est un charmeur, un séducteur, un battant, et un menteur. Et maintenant, c'est un père absent accusé d'avoir kidnappé sa fille, qu'il a à peine connue. En cherchant Jody, Nelly va sauver des vies, faire des rencontres, réunir des êtres chers, se faire des ennemis parmi ses amis, risquer sa vie et celle de ses proches et se redresser chaque fois qu'il tombera à terre. Aussi difficile que ce soit à admettre, en perdant sa fille, il se retrouve lui-même.
