Basé sur les évènements qui ont eu lieu autour de la "Route 1" qui relie Séoul à Pyongyang. C'est l'histoire de l'Officier Lee Jang Woo qui, dans le but de protéger Kim Soo Yeon, la femme qu'il a connu et aimé pendant sa jeunesse, se retrouve dans une guerre à laquelle il n'est pas préparé. Cependant, il est capable de se surpasser et affiche des compétences de survie extraordinaires, fait preuve d'amitié et de coopération dans les conditions brutales de la guerre. Soo Yeon attend le retour de Jang Woo mais se fiance finalement à Tae Ho. Toutefois, lorsque Jang Woo revient en vie, Tae Ho découvre le lien indéfectible qui unit Soo Yeon et Jang Woo et se sent trahi.
