Épisode 1 - 14 YOUTUBE CHANNELS LOSING SUBSCRIBERS: THE ART OF STAYING RELEVANT

16 avril 2018

I’ve watched creators on YouTube ever since I was in High School, which is around the 2007ish range. A lot of people have come and go. The relevancy of a youtuber is quite short if you think about it. If you have been around for as long as me, you’ll remember a channel called “The Station”. This channel was a collaborative channel between some of the biggest youtubers in 2008. A lot of small creators at that time were also afraid of this channel. They were afraid that these big creators were going to take over the platform. Of course, you know this isn’t true. A lot of youtubers from the station aren’t even around today. So, what makes someone stay relevant on YouTube? In this video, we’re going to discuss just that. Épisode 1 - Why Shane Dawson Deserves More Credit Than People Give Him

24 avril 2018

I don’t think people give Shane Dawson the credit he deserves. An outsider’s first instinct is to categorize Shane Dawson’s videos as “just for kids”, and people discredit him this way. It’s as if they’re saying his content isn’t sophisticated enough for adults. The problem is people have been saying that for over a decade. When other YouTubers have disappeared off the platform, creators like Shane Dawson have thrived and built businesses. Épisode 2 - The Shane Dawson Shoutout | 45,000 SUBSCRIBERS

7 mai 2018

First of all, sorry about the audio. About 2 weeks ago I made a video called, “Why Shane Dawson Deserves More Credit Than People Give Him”. After hours and hours put into that video, I was just happy to hit 3,000 views in under 24 hours. My subscriber count at that time was 14K and I usually averaged about 1,000 views in under 24 hours, so that alone was a success to me. Never in my wildest dreams did I think, Shane would actually watch my video. He did and was moved by it. It is such an amazing feeling when someone who has inspired you, tells you that you make good content. Find me Here: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/Designin... Épisode 4 - Why IGTV CAN'T Compete with YouTube (For Now) | Instagram TV Review

28 juin 2018

After reaching 1 billion active users, on June 20th, 2018 Instagram announced their latest feature, Instagram TV. What exactly is Instagram TV? In short, it’s a way to watch long form vertical videos (up to one hour long) on your phone. It’s simple. If you already have an Instagram account, you don’t need to worry about a thing. You’ll be notified when one of your favorite creators uploads a video and you can watch it natively from the instagram app. However if you want to be a creator, you’ll need to download the Instagram TV app. Many have called this new feature YouTube’s biggest competition, and with good reason. Épisode 5 - The Outbreak of BAD Vlogs

21 juillet 2018

The amazing thing about YouTube is that anyone can upload a video. The bad thing about YouTube is that anyone can upload a video. It’s estimated that about 400 hours of video are uploaded to the site every minute. Chances are, a few hours of them are bad vlogs. Épisode 6 - Bobby Burns: YouTube VS. Happiness | Is Being Yourself Enough?

31 juillet 2018

Sponsored. Affordable private online counseling: https://www.betterhelp.com/psychirl One of the running themes that may seem like my channel is based on in regards to analyzing youtubers is, “forget the YouTube rules to growth. Just be yourself, and you’ll be successful”. You see this message in my videos about Shane Dawson and PewDiePie, but thinking this way can be dangerous. Although their success can offer aspiring small youtubers valuable lessons, we have to remember that many have followed in their footsteps and have failed. We often put too much emphasize on studying how someone got to the top, but too little studying people who didn’t make it. This is called survivorship bias. So, despite the fact that many of the biggest creators on YouTube have broken the “focus on a niche” rule, we can’t ignore the fact that many more have broken this rule too and failed. A point even more overlooked is creators who do stick to a niche, but become increasingly demotivated, uncreative, and ultimately unhappy, and in my opinion this is most identified in the creator, Bobby Burns. Épisode 7 - Dehumanizing YouTubers: Inside Backlash w/ Bobby Burns

18 août 2018

Video we did on Bobby's Channel: https://goo.gl/RJRWJ4 Camera #2 - LifeLikeJosie: https://goo.gl/gJWguC On my channel, I often analyze YouTubers and Internet culture. Despite me not saying anything too overly negative, there is a level of dehumanization that happens. I for example never analyze why friends lose jobs or receive a pay-cut, and then upload a video about it. I have however, theorized why Youtubers may be losing views. When a YouTuber by the name of Bobby Burns contacted me (whom I’ve analyzed before), that human element came back. This video will discuss the dehumanization of youtubers, and take a look into what happens during controversy. Épisode 8 - Small YouTubers: Entitlement, Obsession, and Success w/ LifeLikeJosie

Ahhhh the YouTuber. What anyone would do to have a job like that. You probably recognize names such as Liza Koshy, David Dobrik, Shane Dawson, IDubbz, Peter Mckinnon, and Jenna Marbles. But every minute about 300-500 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube, and some of those hours are from talented creators you’ve never heard before, small YouTubers. Épisode 9 - The Fandom in LOVE with SCHOOL SHOOTERS

29 octobre 2018

The true crime community on Tumblr is a place for people who are interested in learning about the psychology of serial killers and mass murderers. Inherently, there is nothing wrong with taking an interest in this. Although some would argue there is a fandom that takes it too far. A number of people in the true crime community idolize and romanticize mass murderers. One particular group they romanticize, the school shooter. Please do not bully or harass anyone featured in the video. Épisode 10 - Emma Chamberlain: How Super Fans Are Created

8 novembre 2018

Emma Chamberlain is having this astounding effect on YouTube and you can see this through her fans. Left and right, other creators are being called Emma copycats simply for having self deprecating humor, using exaggerated edits for comedic effect, and liking iced coffee. Emma does have her own personality that really separates her videos from the rest, but all those things never originated from her. What we’re seeing is a group of very dedicated fans. They watch everything Emma is in and defend her no matter what. This type of dedication is regardless of numbers. What is it that makes these fans so dedicated? Épisode 11 - What the "Fall" of H3H3 Actually Reveals in the Drama/Commentary Community (w/Dara Tah)

26 novembre 2018

YouTube has cultivated some of the best creators in the digital age, mainstream media could never replicate. But with that, comes the manipulative content with the sole purpose to garner views at the expense of the audience. Some very fake and others plain problematic, but when the community sees a problem on the platform, many are quick to speak out. One of the most prominent figures Ethan Klein from H3H3 Productions. Ethan has gained massive credibility for pointing out ridiculous videos on the internet. By winning a landmark lawsuit against Matt Hoss, some would even go as far to say that h3h3 solidified fair use and free speech for a number of creators. However, as of late, the community has began to turn against Ethan calling him a hypocrite, arrogant, money hungry, and someone who throws his friends under the bus. Though Ethan does deserve some of the criticism he has been receiving, this also reveals something deeper in the drama and commentary community. Isn’t it common sense to NOT show up at your favorite YouTuber’s house without their permission? There’s an alarmingly increasing trend going on and that’s, stalking YouTubers. The latest story happening to James Charles, a 19 year old youtuber who has garnered over 12 million subscribers creating makeup focused videos. Fans have repeatedly shown up to his home expecting to be welcomed with open arms, not realizing how ill-mannered their behavior actually is. Épisode 14 - How The Thirst for Views Destroyed The Rewired Soul

26 mars 2019

I really feel like I owe it to my viewers to do this video. Many of you were disappointed with the interview/collaboration I did with The Rewired Soul, a couple months back. With the help of Dara Tah (critic of Chris) and Nate Smith (generally feels Chris’s content is positive), I attempted to give you as much of an unbiased analysis as possible. Chris Boutte of The Rewired Soul has come under controversy as of late. The drama surrounds the mental health and drama community on YouTube. Chris has been accused of partaking in very unethical practices on his channel in regards to mental health and an individual’s boundaries. In addition many claim he is a drama channel masquerading as a mental health channel. Épisode 15 - What the End Of The "Casey Neistat Style" Reveals About YouTube CopyCats

23 avril 2019

Casey Neistat is a New York City vlogger that influenced the ecosystem of YouTube immensely. Neistat brought his filmmaking background to the “Vlogging” genre. He implemented elements such as time lapses, montages, DSLR cameras, and more. These new techniques were so unique many were inspired by his style. As a result, a number of youtubers applied Neistat’s techniques to their own niches in order to fit their narrative. There are quite a few individuals though, who blatantly copied everything Neistat did. This video will discuss the difference between copying and inspiration. Épisode 16 - The Slenderman and Our Dangerous Relationship with the Internet

7 mai 2019

Donate to Research efforts for Mental Health: http://bit.ly/brainandbehavior Unfortunately, this video will probably be demonetized and suppressed because of subject matter. Despite this, I still thought the story was the best way to bring awareness to mental health this month. May is mental health awareness month and although the conversation has become more open, there’s still more that can be done. Today we’re talking about “The Slenderman Case”, where 2 12 year old girls attempted to take the life of another 12 year old in order to please the fictional character Slenderman. The case made national headlines because of the girls’ ages and their motive. Some blame the internet and creepy pastas, some blame the parents, and some blame mental health. Though this case has ended with 2 young girls throwing away their lives, we can all learn something from this tragic event. Tati Westbrook released a 43 minute video detailing James’s disloyalty by promoting a competing brand and his alleged predatory behavior towards straight men. The video threw the internet in a rage against James, but was it all the truth? Or was this some sinister plan to manipulate the viewers? Épisode 19 - How Instagram Is Changing Us

20 juin 2019

Here’s a short fun one, on my thoughts about Instagram. Ever since the app was launched in 2010, instagram has cultivated its own culture of cliche photos. The most interesting part about this phenomena is that it's influencing more than you think. And we can see that through the cliche images on the platform and how people interact with them.   Find me Here: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/DesigningDonna Twitter: https://twitter.com/designingdonna Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/psychirl/ My Gear (Affiliate Links): Camera - Canon 70d: http://amzn.to/2oT8PhB Lights: http://amzn.to/2FeLHVZ Main Sources - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDwZaJRpCN4

Épisode 20 - The YouTuber Copying David Dobrik? | Cryptomnesia

28 juin 2019

Please do not send hate to anyone mentioned in the video. The debate between inspiration and plagiarism has risen with the birth of social media. Is it possible to unconsciously copy someone though? Or is that an excuse to let unoriginal people off the hook? Today we talk about 2 creators (David Dobrik and Alex Warren) and discuss the issue further. Épisode 21 - What Actually Happened to Tana After Shane Dawson | Trial By Internet

18 août 2019

It’s been over a year since the Tanacon disaster, and what’s Tana Mongeau up to now? She’s marrying infamous vlogger, Jake Paul. Their marriage may or may not be fake. Let’s face it. It’s probably fake. To top it all off, she finally became a featured creator at VidCon and is doing a show with MTV. Looks like things worked out in the end for Mongeau. It’s crazy to think that just a year ago, the internet was angered by Tana’s failed convention. Criticism was coming in left and right from creators and viewers. Seeing where she is now though, does that internet outrage actually work? Épisode 22 - The "Cute Boy" Epidemic

7 septembre 2019

So, there’s this new “style” going on that seems to only exist on Tik Tok and Instagram. It’s commonly identified by painted nails, dark clothing, chains, hair parted down the middle, and a lot of “sad rap”. Males who follow this particular style or trend are known as Eboys and they’re taking over the internet. All they really do though, is dance in front of the camera. How have they gained popularity? Perhaps it’s talent? Perhaps how attractive, teen girls perceive them to be plays a role into how successful they are on social media. Épisode 23 - Area 51 Raid Joke Turns Into Reality | Beliefs

4 octobre 2019

Our fascination with extraterrestrial life has been going on for a long time and this has been made very apparent in our media. Are we really the only intelligent form of life in the universe? If not, are they hostile? Would they be as smart as us? Perhaps they’re among us. Or maybe we’re already secretly working with them. With these beings in our books, movies, and music, it was only a matter of time that aliens were going to be turned into memes. On September 20th, 2019 2 million people claimed they were going to storm Area 51. Épisode 25 - How Joji Reveals The Dark Side of Fame

3 septembre 2020

Last year, a poll conducted by Harris and Lego revealed that the number one dream job of kids 8-12 in China, was Astronaut. In the US and UK, it was YouTuber. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be a youtuber, but I think that survey unmasks an increasing obsession with fame in Western countries. Critics often warn of the impending narcissism the youth will display. One interesting notion was from Joji’s music videos. His music videos from 2020, may reveal a hidden message about fame and the celebrity.  Find me Here: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/DesigningDonna Twitter: https://twitter.com/designingdonna Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/psychirl/ Main Sources: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v97FPN2US2o https://arstechnica.com/science/2019/07/american-kids-would-much-rather-be-youtubers-than-astronauts/ https://www.researchgate.net/publication/233667622_Being_a_Celebrity_A_Phenomenology_of_Fame https://www.cell.com/current-biology/pdf/S0960-9822(05)00093-X.pdf https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/432a/51ae6e67a9c7fdb7b97c4917da96bb3140cf.pdf CAMERA GEAR (Affiliate): Canon 90D: https://amzn.to/38VKEEV LENSES: Sigma 18-35mm F1.8: https://amzn.to/2vbLv5K Canon 18-135 F3.5-5.6: https://amzn.to/2SZiaot Canon 10-18 F4.5-5.6: https://amzn.to/2SUcv2U AUDIO: Sennheiser MKE2 Lavalier Pro Set: https://amzn.to/2Pl5hmo Shure VP83 LensHopper Mic: https://amzn.to/2HP0i9p

13 octobre 2020

On June 25th, 2020 Jenna Marbles released a video called “A Message”, announcing she would be leaving her YouTube channel indefinitely. This decision came after a number of viewers demanded an explanation for her past content. Not only was this situation sad because a beloved creator was leaving the platform, but it also marked the end of authenticity. Épisode 27 - The Advantage of Being Attractive: Alex From Target

9 février 2021

Like the story of how Audrey Hepburn was discovered, a lot of people fantasize about being spotted by a famous casting director when going about their day. What’s different today is the internet has made that entirely possible with a click of a button. Whether you’re on Instagram, YouTube, or Tik Tok the content you put online has the potential of going viral. This leads to a higher chance of someone important seeing it and asking you to star in their major project. Although not comparable to Hepburn, the modern day version of her story happened to this cashier at target, sending him to internet celebrity status overnight. At 16 years old, Alex became a meme known as “Alex From Target”. Despite this he has disappeared from the internet today. What happened? Were his looks not enough to keep his online followers?
