Épisode 1 - So You Think You Can Be President? - Debate Remix (widescreen)

22 octobre 2008

A new reality television show where candidates compete for American votes! Presidential hopefuls must present their positions on major issues in front of our live studio audience then face hard-hitting critiques from our panel of judges. Viewers at home will delight in the spectacle as candidates are challenged in ways never before seen in mainstream media. In this week's episode, only two weeks before the election, Senator Obama and Senator McCain have their feet held to the fire over shockingly similar positions on energy and foreign policy. Who will be this season's champion and take home the grand prize? You'll have to watch and decide for yourself, then participate in the show by casting a vote* for your favorite performer on November 4th! ----- *Some restrictions may apply. Épisode 2 - Buffy vs Edward: Twilight Remixed -- [original version]

20 juin 2009

In this re-imagined narrative, Edward Cullen from the Twilight Series meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It's an example of transformative storytelling serving as a pro-feminist visual critique of Edward's character and generally creepy behavior. Seen through Buffy's eyes, some of the more sexist gender roles and patriarchal Hollywood themes embedded in the Twilight saga are exposed - in hilarious ways. Ultimately this remix is about more than a decisive showdown between the slayer and the sparkly vampire. It also doubles as a metaphor for the ongoing battle between two opposing visions of gender roles in the 21ist century. • Read my post on why I made this remix: http://popculturedetective.agency/2009/what-would-buffy-do-notes-on-dusting-edward-cullen • More on fighting the bogus takedown of this video by Lionsgate: http://popculturedetective.agency/2013/buffy-vs-edward-remix-unfairly-removed-by-lionsgate • Frequently Asked Questions post about the remix, including why I intentionally left the color differences: http://popculturedetective.agency/2009/faq-on-buffy-vs-edward • This transformative remix work constitutes a fair-use of any copyrighted material as provided for in section 107 of the US copyright law. Épisode 3 - Donald Duck Meets Glenn Beck in Right Wing Radio Duck

2 octobre 2010

A re-imagined Donald Duck cartoon remix constructed using 50 classic Walt Disney animated shorts from the 1930s through 1960s. Donald's life is turned upside-down by the current economic crisis and he finds himself unemployed and falling behind on his house payments. As his frustration turns into despair Donald discovers a seemingly sympathetic voice coming from his radio named Glenn Beck. Will Donald's feelings of disenfranchisement lead him to be persuaded by his radio's increasingly paranoid and divisive rhetoric? Or will our favorite Disney duck decide that this voice is not actually on his side after all? Épisode 4 - Glenn Beck gets "Donald Ducked" - CBS Channel 5 Evening News

7 octobre 2010

I love that they actually used the term "Donald Ducked" in the promo for their news segment! News segment from Channel 5 Eyewitness News at 6 O'clock - October 6th 2010 SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) — In a nondescript Mission District apartment building, in a tiny room, lives a David who has taken on a Goliath. Jonathan McIntosh didn't use a slingshot. He used a computer, and took aim at one of America's most controversial talk show hosts, Glenn Beck. And he ended up goosing him with a duck. Donald Duck. A video mashup of Glenn Beck on the radio mixed with Donald Duck cartoons has gone viral. He worked three months on the project, sometimes 10 hours a day. So far, at the video has received at least half a million hits, among them Glenn Beck. "It is some of the best, well made propaganda I have ever seen", said Beck on Monday's show. "But if I'm not mistaken, some of these re-mix videos get federal funding. We're looking into the funding of this gentleman." McIntosh says he received no federal funding. No funding at all. In fact, he lost his job last month, which gave him time to work on the video. In the video, Donald Duck loses his job and listens to the Beck radio show. The Depression-era cartoon and Beck's musings pair well. Out of context, of course. Beck talks of Nazi's and Communists taking over the country today and Donald Duck is fighting them back in the 1940s. McIntosh thinks Beck's politics are dangerous and likes how the new media landscape can allow one person to take on the powers at the top. "I like that I'm able to speak back at him, and that people are using re-mix, or Youtube, to talk back and there can be a larger voice for those of us who don't have a big radio or TV station." McIntosh has made no money on the video, but said it would be nice to get a job out it." Épisode 8 - Too Many Dicks on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

9 septembre 2011

An episode of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart is interrupted by a remixed critique of the show's gender imbalance and "boys' locker room" comedy stylings. The remix takeover was created with clips borrowed from over 100 episodes of The Daily Show combined with the Flight of the Conchords song "Too Many Dicks on the Dance Floor" in order to subvert both sources. I am a fan of The Daily Show much of the time but often find myself disappointed with the overwhelmingly male-centered style, jokes, segments and guests each night. Sure the occasional, strategically deployed, dick joke can be an effective tool for pointing out sexism or undermining homophobia but more often than not Jon Stewart and his team just use penis humor to get cheap laughs. I can't help but feel that there are, in fact, just too many dicks on the dance floor. The serious lack of women in on-screen or leading creative roles on The Daily Show and other late-night comedy shows has been well documented and discussed in recent years. But here's a quick recap: Only 3 of the 12 regular correspondences/contributors on The Daily Show are women. Only 2 of the 16 writers are women. And so far barely 15% of the guests in 2011 have been women. To be absolutely clear I'm not saying that Jon Stewart or his team are personally sexists but as host and Executive Producer Jon is largely responsible for the messaging, tone and culture of the Daily Show as a comedy institution. He could get creative in addressing the boys' club comedy culture on the show -- and, as a start, hire more women in leading creative roles. As Wyatt Cenac has pointed out, talented female comedians are not hard to find. The original Flight of the Conchords song is not meant to be critical of sexism -- in fact its heteronormative and it could be argued even a bit homophobic -- but when it is combined with any male-centered media source it instantly becomes a subversive critical commentary. Try remixing it and see for yourself! More about this video (plus more links) on my site: http://popculturedetective.agency/2011/too-many-dicks-on-the-daily-show INSPIRATION: This remix was inspired by the practice of fan vidding and specifically by the vid Star Trek Dance Floor created by Sloane. She used the same song to point out the lack of female characters in J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek reboot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deQuFc3BP74 In 2010 Feminist Frequency video blogger mashed-up the same song in order to highlight the violent phallic imagery in modern video games. http://www.youtube.com/watch?src_vid=uzU1_CsOnJA NOTE: This remix was made well before TDS hired Jessica Williams as a regular correspondent in January 2012. The addition of Williams to the TDS staff is definitely a step in the right direction. However the ridiculous number of dick jokes on the show has only grown worse. ON COMMENTING: I welcome good comments but I've decided to hold all comments for approval on this one (for obvious reasons) in an attempt to provide a space for a somewhat productive conversation. Sexist comments will not ever be approved. Any variation of the "women just aren't funny" or the "there aren't many funny women" nonsense will also not be approved so don't even try. The old "its just comedy" defense will be denied as well because comedy is one of the primary ways that sexism and sexist messages are normalized and reinforced in our culture. Épisode 9 - ADmented Reality - Google Glasses Remixed with Google Ads

5 avril 2012

When I saw Google had somehow forgotten to include any ads in their Project Glass promotional video I just couldn't resist fixing that oversight for them. So here is my slightly more realistic version of Google's augmented reality glasses - now featuring contextual Google Ads! Of course I'm exaggerating a bit here for visual effect to mimic the modern web browsing experience. Google will probably not be this obvious with their interface but there's no question that the company will be gathering a massive amount of extremely personal data based on what you look at and for how long. The company may use this data mining to build even more detailed consumer profiles and/or sell über targeted ads. Because let's face it, Google is really just a massive advertising company at heart. Fun Fact: All of the AdWords used are actual Google ad returns found via Google searches based on the dialog, situation or setting in the original video. Yes "Music, Stop!" does actually return an ad asking if you would like to listen to music. Google really can't be too annoyed at this remix because after all I'm just putting Google Ads overtop of a Google video on Google's owned video hosting service. See the original Google video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9c6W4CCU9M4 UPDATE: This remix appears to have gone viral with over half a million views in 5 days. I'm happy the video has been part of the changing media story around Google's "augmented reality" product from the initial uncritical view to a slightly more skeptical frame that at least raises concerns about privacy, personal data mining and "targeted" advertising. FURTHER READING: Back in February 2012 Sebastian Anthony wrote about the then-rumored Google glasses on Extreme Tech saying - "Remember, Google is ultimately an advertising company, where eyeballs directly translate into money — and it's hard to get any closer to your eyes than a pair of augmented reality glasses. When you look at a car dealership, Google will be able to display ads from a competitor. When you sit in front of a computer, or TV, or stare through a shop window, the glasses will be able to track your head movements and report back on the efficacy of display ads. Perhaps most excitingly, when you read a newspaper or book or other static medium, Google could even overlay its own, interactive ads." Épisode 15 - Military Recruitment and Hollywood

28 septembre 2016

Help me make more videos! https://www.patreon.com/popdetective The sequel to the 1996 mega-blockbuster "Independence Day" hit theaters this summer but there was something a little strange about many of the trailers. What looks like a clever marketing campaign centered on joining the fictional "Earth Space Defense" was actually a cross-branded recruitment tool for the US Army. It’s part of a multi-million dollar joint advertising venture between 20th Century Fox and the United States Military. PATREON This video was made possible by support from viewers like you! Épisode 19 - Predatory Romance in Harrison Ford Movies

31 mars 2017

Harrison Ford has played some of the most iconic male heroes ever to appear on film. Although each movie attempts to frame these actions as sexy or romantic, predatory is a more fitting description. It's a science fiction convention in which the mind of a naive, yet highly skilled, girl is written into the body of a mature sexualized woman. Born sexy yesterday is about an unbalanced relationship, but it’s also very much connected to masculinity. The subtext of the trope is rooted in a deep seated male insecurity around experienced women and sexuality. Note that Born Yesterday isn't meant literally. Born Sexy Yesterday can be written literally but it doesn't have to be. If media uses a "fish out of water" plot to frame an adult woman as an inexperience child then it fits the trope. Adorkable Misogynists are male characters whose geeky version of masculinity is framed as comically pathetic yet still endearing. Their status as nerdy “nice guys” then lets them off the hook for a wide range of creepy, entitled, and sexist behaviors. This is the 1st of two video essays about gender on The Big Bang Theory. Épisode 25 - Wall-E as Sociological Storytelling

1 novembre 2017

Pixar’s Wall-E is a masterpiece of animated filmmaking about two adorable robots falling in love, though I’d argue it also serves as an excellent example of sociological storytelling. Social systems are one of the most important, and most misunderstood, concepts in my work on media and masculinity. So in this video essay I use Wall-E's Axiom star liner (and the board game Monopoly) to illustrate how social systems operate in our culture. This is the 1st of two video essays on this topic. Part 1 focuses on humor involving men sexually assaulting or harassing other men. Épisode 32 - How The Shawshank Redemption Humanizes Prisoners

1 juillet 2019

Help me make more videos! https://www.patreon.com/popdetective On a narrative level The Shawshank Redemption is a movie about the power of hope in the face of extraordinary hardship. But underpinning Andy Dufresne’s story we also find a blistering critique of the prison system and criminal justice policy in the United States. Épisode 33 - Stranger Things, Belligerent Romance, and the Danger of Nostalgia

17 septembre 2019

The hit Netflix series Stranger Things is a love letter to iconic pop culture media of decades past. But there are dangers in leaning too heavily on nostalgia because media makers can sometimes end up reproducing harmful patterns along with their retro aesthetics, especially when it comes to action hero masculinity and belligerent romance conventions from the 1980s.
