Épisode 105 - Trope Talk: Five Man Band

So! Fun fact, this is actually one of my favorite tropes, because I'm a big ol' dork and I pretty much consume media exclusively for good character dynamics. Five-man bands are one way to make that happen, but any sufficiently large pile of characters can be written to interact in a suitably entertaining/heartwarming/squee-inducing way as to appeal to my Very Refined Tastes In Media (hurriedly shoves Thundercats 2011 under the carpet). Today we break down the structure of a five-man band, examine a few of its more convenient story uses, and overall have a grand ol' time, no Comment Kaiju required! On a related note, I have to hijack my own video description to recommend My Hero Academia to all of you, as it manages to create the kind of beautifully realistic banter and interwoven character dynamics I typically expect from five-man bands, but on the scale of a class of twenty people plus all their teachers plus some students from the other classes too. It's beyond impressive. If you've already seen or read it, tell me who your favorite characters are! Mine are Tsuyu and Kirishima but I'm open to suggestions! Épisode 118 - Trope Talk: Character Deaths

It's tragic! It's deep! It's a looming threat to your heroes in every dangerous endeavor! And for some reason it's weirdly hard to convince your audience you really MEAN it! One example I didn't think to include in the video is Eren Jeagar from the early episodes of Attack On Titan. Sure, this show hadn't shied away from murdering main-ISH characters, and a lot of the early appeal of the show was how brutal, bleak and desolate the reality of the situation was - but when the ACTUAL PROTAGONIST loses an arm and a leg and gets eaten on his first major mission, the resounding response from the fanbase was "ha, bullshit" and lo and behold, he was one confusing superpower away from being fine again. It kind of took a lot of the stakes away from a show that had gotten BIG on how high those stakes were. At the risk of making the comment section too depressing, comment your favorite well-executed character death and, if you have one, a fakeout death that actually had you convinced! Bad news, gang. You know how I can normally bench-press a house and turn bullets into confetti with my brain? Well I'm experiencing some technical difficulties and long story short please keep me alive until this gets fixed I have no idea how you all handle being so squishy all the time. I'm a fan of this trope (love me some non-disruptive drama that loops back to a nice comfy status quo at the end), but like all tropes it can be done very badly. What's your favorite and/or LEAST favorite execution of this trope? Sometimes I wonder if the Justice League episode "Hereafter" was a specific counter to the common fan argument that Superman is the only useless member of the League when he loses his powers (Wonder Woman being a highly trained warrior, GL being a marine, etc). He handled himself pretty well stranded powerless on a hostile alienish world for weeks - plus he grew that fantastic beard! Amnesia! The trope too powerful for its own good! It's a favorite of soap operas and anything else that likes quick and easy drama, and when it comes to shuffling around core character traits, amnesia is basically a swiss army knife - need to roll back a week or two of character development? need to revert a character to a clean slate? wanna make one of your lovebirds forget their FIRST KISS? amnesia is the trope for you! and if you're an audience member sick of being emotionally manipulated by writers doing any and all of the above… WELCOME TO THE PARTY What's YOUR favorite amnesia plot - or, if you've got an axe to grind, what's your LEAST favorite instance of the trope? Yell about it in the comments! My favorite example of amnesia done right, which I didn't have time to delve into here, is the season 1 finale/season 2 opener of Transformers Prime, where Optimus Prime sacrifices the Matrix of Leadership to defeat Unicron, and in the process loses all of his memories SINCE HE GAINED THE MATRIX and first BECAME Optimus Prime. He reverts to Orion Pax, a simple pacifist librarian who believes Megatron is still "Megatronus", his best friend and fellow activist. He doesn't know ANY of the autobots, since technically speaking, Megatron IS his oldest friend - so he ends up working with the Decepticons for MULTIPLE EPISODES as the Autobots try and get a working backup copy of the Matrix of Leadership to restore Prime's memories. It's a uniquely fascinating look into the mind of a truly ancient and very battle-hardened being from BEFORE he became the most iconic leader in science fiction - the seeds of the noble paragon he'd become without the weight of worlds on his shoulders. Orion Pax doesn't even BELIEVE he could be a Prime, because he doesn't think he's WORTHY of it. And even without his memory, Orion Pax figures out that Megatron is lying to him and being all evil and stuff, and rebels all on his own without Autobot help (and then gets his ass kicked because Orion Pax has no idea how to fight, oops). It's honestly such a fun arc (and I have to give ENDLESS credit to both the animators and to Prime's voice actor, Peter Cullen, who, exclusively through facial expression and tone of voice, manage to communicate a much younger, much less experienced Prime despite his appearance being totally unchanged. It's so well-done, even before he talks you can tell something's wrong.) By far, the biggest MVPs of the British Empire were their Architects. So let's take a look at four cities from Britain and Ireland to see how the empire redefined its cities and subsequently set the model for modern urbanism! Look, what I'm trying to say is that they did cool stuff and now they look real nice. FUN TIMES WITH PROBLEMATIC HISTORICAL NOMENCLATURE: The term "British Isles" is strongly contested by Academics in particular and most Irish in general, as it suggests (rather imperially) that Ireland belongs to Britain. I myself am guilty of this usage in the past, I own that mistake, and I'll avoid it in the future. Accordingly, this video is titled "Britain and Ireland" and the video thumbnail bears the simple moniker of "The Isles"... with the added benefit that the single-line formatting makes it fit neatly on top of the horizontal line in St George's cross and it looks beautifully sharp, but that's just my undying commitment to aesthetics in action. I for one was shocked to learn the Egyptians actually buried their kings in a giant Millennium Puzzle. We've covered Egypt on this channel in previous videos, but this History Re-Summarized is the Definitive Edition, redone from the ground up to present the best possible account — starting at the beginning for a full chronology of Ancient Egypt, from the very first Pharaohs the Muslim Conquest. (Observant Egyptologists and D&D players might note the Pyramids are actually D-*Fives*, but technically they're D-*Nines* since each face is actually two right triangles at a slight angle to each other and not a single flat isosceles triangle, so shhh, we can pretend it's a D4.)
