Épisode 1 - Why Many Cities Suck (but Dutch Cities Don't)

15 septembre 2019

The first video in a new series for Not Just Bikes - what makes a city great? An exploration of cities, density, walkability, and what Dutch cities do right. Patreon: https://patreon.com/notjustbikes Twitter: https://twitter.com/notjustbikes Reddit: https://reddit.com/r/notjustbikes

Épisode 2 - Highways Almost Destroyed Amsterdam - Plan Jokinen

13 octobre 2019

In the 1960s, it seemed clear that the future was the car. Amsterdam had its own plans about how to make the city more car-friendly. Some of these plans failed, others only partially. Discover how radically different Amsterdam might have been had these plans succeeded. Épisode 3 - Why Grocery Shopping is Better in Amsterdam

4 novembre 2019

When it comes to differences between life in North America versus life in the Netherlands, grocery shopping might just be the biggest thing. In this video I discuss the differences between the fresh-food approach taken in the Netherlands compared to the bulk shopping car-centric approach of North America. For our family, it's not even a question: we think the Dutch approach is far superior. Épisode 4 - Bicycle tour of Frans Halsbuurt - a parking-free neighbourhood in Amsterdam

11 novembre 2019

In 2018, the Frans Halsbuurt neighbourhood in De Pijp, Amsterdam was make parking-free. Street parking for cars was removed and turned into bicycle parking, gardens, playgrounds, loading zones, and handicapped parking. An underground parking garage was created for residents' and visitors' vehicles. The city of Amsterdam is planning a larger re-design of this neighbourhood, but this video shows the current state, one year after car parking was removed. Plants have started growing in the gardens and the bicycle parking is well used. More information is available her (in Dutch): https://www.amsterdam.nl/projecten/frans-halsbuurt/ The final implementation of the street will start in September 2020. Épisode 5 - Car-free Streets are Amazing (and we need more of them)

16 novembre 2019

Autoluw is a Dutch urban planning concept meaning "nearly car-free". It's put into use all over the country, and has resulted in some of the greatest urban environments I've ever been to. This video explores the concept of autoluw, and how it is applied to Dutch streets, along with some examples from some foreign cities as well, such as Toronto and Copenhagen. I also talk about what Amsterdam has done to move towards the autoluwe stad, and briefly mention Agenda Amsterdam Autoluw. There is so much to talk about on this subject! I definitely plan a follow-up video on different aspects of where autoluw principles are applied. If you're interested in such things, make sure you subscribe! Épisode 6 - The Dutch Solution for Safer Sidewalks - Continuous Sidewalks

29 novembre 2019

Time to get excited about SIDEWALKS! The Netherlands does a lot to ensure a safe environment for pedestrians and cyclists, but the one that stands out the most for me is continuous sidewalks. This video explores the basic concept of these safer sidewalks that are used everywhere in the Netherlands, but extremely rare (or poorly implemented) in other countries. This is an important part of the sustainable safety / vision zero efforts of the Netherlands to make streets safer for vulnerable road users. Épisode 7 - The Hidden Street Playgrounds of Amsterdam

15 décembre 2019

The street playgrounds of Amsterdam are a unique element that I don't see - or at least, are not as ubiquitous - in other countries. Épisode 8 - We Have No Garbage Day in Amsterdam!

30 décembre 2019

Épisode 4 - Do Your Buses Get Stuck in Traffic? Traffic solutions & the Downs-Thomson Paradox

5 mars 2020

Do your buses get stuck in traffic? It's amazing what a difference it makes to life the city when public transit is treated as a first-class alternative to driving, as it is in Amsterdam, and many other cities in the Netherlands. Patreon: https://patreon.com/notjustbikes Twitter: https://twitter.com/notjustbikes Reddit: https://reddit.com/r/notjustbikes The Downs-Thomson Paradox on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downs%E2%80%93Thomson_paradox The description of the Downs-Thomson paradox is simplified in this video, but in general, this principal applies. Technically it is possible to meet demand for car traffic, but in practice, this is unaffordable, simply due to the amount of infrastructure required per person carried by car: there is no city that has done this in a sustainable way (as StrongTowns.org is keen to point out). More information can be found at StrongTowns.org, in articles such as this one: https://www.strongtowns.org/journal/2018/10/2/does-new-development-cause-traffic and this one: https://www.strongtowns.org/journal/2015/10/18/dealing-with-congestion The Dutch traffic per hour graph was taken from this report: 3e Publieksrapportage Rijkswegennet 2017 https://www.rijksoverheid.nl/documenten/rapporten/2018/03/12/3e-publieksrapportage-rijkswegennet-2017 The graph of daily traffic in a car-dependant city is based off of the graph here: https://www.wbez.org/shows/curious-city/when-is-chicagoarea-traffic-the-worst/73cf66f9-8a44-4227-8619-68220de78ad3 Comparing the traffic volumes between countries is difficult, as they use different methods of measuring traffic, so don't take this comparison too literally; it's meant to be illustrative. Épisode 5 - Copenhagen is Great ... but it's not Amsterdam

15 mars 2020

Épisode 6 - Coronavirus in Amsterdam and the Taiwan Response

24 mars 2020

The Netherlands is in "intelligent lockdown" due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I used to live in Taiwan, and I stil have a lot of friends there, so it's amazing to see the difference in the approach taken by the two countries. This video shows some clips of Amsterdam under lockdown, as well as a discussion about the Taiwan pandemic response that should be followed by Western countries. Épisode 7 - Why Great Cities Let You (Easily!) Cycle to IKEA

20 mars 2020

(Filmed pre-COVID-19) Cycling to IKEA is (trivially) easy in Amsterdam, and cycling infrastructure in the suburbs is actually better - and safer - than near the city centre. But while that may be common in the Netherlands, it's very uncommon elsewhere, and it has knock-on effects that increase car traffic and limit the options to people in the city. I definitely prefer the Dutch approach here. Patreon: https://patreon.com/notjustbikes Twitter: https://twitter.com/notjustbikes Reddit: https://reddit.com/r/notjustbikes This video was not sponsored by IKEA. They actually got pretty upset that I was filming there. 😉 ... also, this was filmed before the COVID-19 outbreak in the Netherlands, so that wasn't a concern (or a reason for the light traffic). This is my first video that was filmed completely in 4k at 50 frames per seconds (exported to 1080p). That should hopefully eliminate the lighting artifacts that I was having with my GoPro on previous videos, as well as to provide a more "real life" feeling. Épisode 8 - Bicycle Ride - Amsterdam Rivierenbuurt to IKEA

A complete ride in Amsterdam from Rivierenbuurt to IKEA in Zuid-Oost. This is the raw footage that was used to make my video about bicycle infrastructure near IKEA in Amsterdam: https://youtu.be/CgvYgxo6UY8 It's interesting to see how the bicycle infrastructure gets better the farther into the suburbs that I ride. Épisode 10 - The Incredible Underground Bicycle Parking Garages of the Netherlands

28 avril 2020

The Netherlands is one of the few countries that has underground bicycle parking garages, and is definitely the country with the most of them! But most of these expensive infrastructure projects are new, and the Netherlands is still in a stage of exploration when it comes to building the perfect bicycle parking garage. Épisode 11 - Why Cars Rarely Crash into Buildings in the Netherlands

15 mai 2020

I've lived in the Netherlands for a year and a half and I realized that I haven't seen a car crash into a building yet. Épisode 12 - The Miniature Microcars of Amsterdam

29 mai 2020

When I first arrived in the Netherlands, I was amazed at the minature "microcars" that were everywhere. These are cars that make the Smart fourtwo look like a giant. It's really interesting to me where microcars might fit in the 21st century city, and what problems they solve for people with mobility issues. Épisode 13 - The Best Way to Cycle - Bicycle Only Roads in the Netherlands

11 juin 2020

When we first moved to the Netherlands, the most amazing thing to us was bicycle-only roads. Using these, we could go long distances in and out of the city without ever needing to stop, and with almost no interaction with cars. This kind of road totally changed cycling for me, making me actually enjoy cycling, instead of just doing it because it was the fastest way to get around. Hate waiting at traffic lights? Yeah, me too. Good thing the Netherlands has smarter traffic lights to make sure that happens as little as possible. It's amazing what you can do when you design to move as many people as possible, instead of as many cars as possible. Épisode 18 - Rotterdam: the City Rebuilt for Cars

18 août 2020

Rotterdam is a city very different from any other in the Netherlands. After being nearly flattened in 1940, the city underwent a major transformation in the 1950s and 1960s to become a "modern" city, designed with cars in mind. This video explores what Rotterdam is like today, and what the city is doing to undo some of the damage caused by decades of car-centric policy. Want to support Not Just Bikes? Épisode 19 - Why We Won't Raise Our Kids in Suburbia (and moved to the Netherlands instead)

3 septembre 2020

I was always told, growing up, that the suburbs (of Canada) are a good place to raise children. But I've come to appreciate the importance of independence for the a child's development, something that's nearly impossible in today's car-dependent suburbs. It was pretty clear that suburbia was not right for our kids, so we moved to the Netherlands instead. Épisode 20 - Invisible Bicycle Infrastructure of the Netherlands (Hoofdnetten)

21 septembre 2020

The Netherlands has some of the best bicycle infrastructure in the world, but some of it is completely invisible ... until you learn about ontvlechten. Dutch cities take care to separate or "disentangle" routes taken by drivers from those taken by everyone else, making their streets safer, quieter, and more efficient. These routes are determined by hoofdnetten (and plusnetten), where each form of traffic gets its own routes through the city. Épisode 21 - I am not a "Cyclist" (and most Dutch people aren't either)

3 octobre 2020

I am not a "cyclist", but I do ride a bicycle almost every day ... along with hundreds of other people who are also not "cyclists". One thing I really appreciate about the Netherlands is that there is no stigma or group dynamics to riding a bicycle. There's no "bicycle culture" in the Netherlands, just like there's no "shoe culture" for people who walk where you live. It's just another option that you can use if it's more convenient (and it often is, due to properly designed road infrastructure). This pattern was not accidental or even inevitable, but came about over years of evolution. In the mid 20th century, America threw out all that, and started down a drastically different path - the Suburban Experiment. Épisode 2 - Why Canadians Can't Bike in the Winter (but Finnish people can)

24 janvier 2021

When talking about bicycle infrastructure in Canada, the number one excuse I hear is "winter." Many Canadians see the cold and snow as a fundamental barrier to year round cycling. But one city, Oulu in Finland, with winter weather worse than most Canadian cities, shows that winter cycling has nothing to do with the weather, and everything to do with safe cycling infrastructure. Want to learn more about winter cycling? Every February, the Winter Cycling Federation holds a Winter Cycling Congress where experts and advocates get together and talk about best practices in cycling infrastructure and maintenance. 19 février 2021

What happens when a blizzard comes to Amsterdam? We found this February, when storm Darcy hit the Netherlands. In geneal, cycling infrastructure was prioritized, but there were several problems with the train system. And in the end, maybe this storm wasn't quite as bad as people thought it would be, and the Netherlands should probably be prepared for such storms in the future. Épisode 7 - How the Dutch Cross the Street (Safely)

27 février 2021

This is a bit of a repeat for long-time viewers to the channel, but I wanted to share again the best part of pedestrian infrastructure in the Netherlands: continuous sidewalks. These sidewalks are much safer and more comfortable, as they do not require pedestrians to drop down to street level, and it ensures that drivers slow down before crossing paths with pedestrians. If there's one piece of Dutch street design that your city should copy today, it's continuous sidewalks. My original full-length video about continuous sidewalks is here: https://youtu.be/9OfBpQgLXUc #shorts

Épisode 8 - Where the Bicycle was Invented (and Forgotten): Coventry [Guest Video]

28 février 2021

"Coventry - The City That Nearly Forgot The Bicycle" This special guest video was produced by Adam Tranter, the Bicycle Mayor for Coventry, in the UK. Coventry holds an important place in the history of the bicycle. It is the city where both the penny-farthing, as well as the safety bicycle - the template for almost all modern bicycles - was invented. In this short documentary, Adam explains the history of cycling in Coventry, and about the realities of cycling in Coventry today. Comparisons to Amsterdam and the Netherlands are provided. This film will be shown as part of the Coventry Transport Museum's new exhibition Gearing Up: From Saddle to Spoke online on Friday 12 March 2021. The exhibition (https://culturespacecoventry.com/gearing-up) – which it is hoped will open physically when the museum reopens – features over 80 cycles and celebrates the history, unique designs, and benefits of cycling. Épisode 10 - The Houses that Can't be Built in America - The Missing Middle

6 mars 2021

In many US and Canadain cities you really only have two choices for living: an apartment/condo, or a single family home. The housing options in-between these two extremes - called "Missing Middle Housing" - has been legislated almost out of existence in the US and Canada. Now many cities are starting to doubt these regulations and are (slowly) undoing the car-centric mistakes of the past. This video explores the missing middle, what it was, what it still is in Europe, and what it could be in the future in North America. Épisode 11 - How Bankrupt American Cities Stay Alive - Debt [ST04]

5 avril 2021

For centuries, cities used to be built incrementally. Improving and building on successful places, and changing or abandoning unsuccessful places. This changed in America in the 1940s, when whole neighbourhoods were built on the edge of town, to a completed state. After several generations, many of these places are financially insolvent, but are propping themselves up with an ever-growing mountain of debt. Épisode 12 - The Ugly, Dangerous, and Inefficient Stroads found all over the US & Canada [ST05]

22 avril 2021

Stroads are streets that are designed like roads and in doing so, fail at being good at either one. They are too sprawling and hostile to be good streets, and they are too busy and complicated to be good roads. Stroads are inefficient, unsafe, expensive, and ugly. This video introduces the concept of Stroads, and talks about why you will (almost) never find these kind of places in the Netherlands: because here all roads need to have a single purpose as either a motorway, connector road, or end-destination street. The name "stroad" was invented by Strong Towns as a way to explain why road design in the US is fundamentally broken. Car-dependent suburbs suck. But that doesn't mean that all suburbs suck. It is possible to build suburbs that don't suck, and the US and Canada used to design great suburbs all the time. Épisode 16 - Cities Aren't Loud: Cars Are Loud

26 juin 2021

Urban noise is a common problem, and the vast majority of it is created by motor vehicles. Noise is far too often dismissed as a minor nuisance, rather than the legitimate health issue that it is. The book "Curbing Traffic" has a chapter about the health impacts of noise pollution. I explore the research in the book, and visit Delft, the city that is highlighted in the book as being a shining example of what can happen when noise pollution is taken seriously. This video explores the problem that farting cars, farting motorcycles, and farting mopeds create in our cities. Speed limits are important to keep our roads and streets safe but how are they decided? And what happens when a speed limit is set too high or too low? There are right and wrong ways to set our speed limits, and design our streets, but unfortunately North American traffic planners are firmly stuck in the 20th century when it comes to building safe streets.
