Cette série de science-fiction met en scène un groupe de quatre personnes devenues des mutants humains dotés de pouvoirs extraordinaires à la suite de manipulations génétiques menées dans le cadre d'un projet gouvernemental visant à sauver des vies humaines. Les principaux scientifiques ayant travaillé sur ce projet sont Adam Kane et Mason Eckhart. Mason Eckhart essaye par tous les moyens de les éradiquer de la Terre, car il pense que ces anomalies génétiques n'ont pas le droit de vivre. En revanche, Adam aide les nouveaux mutants à s'intégrer dans le monde, notamment à mieux comprendre leurs pouvoirs, et tente de les protéger de Mason Eckhart et de l'ASG (Agence de Sécurité Génétique).
