Ishmael sees his dream of a whaling voyage come true when he joins the crew of the Pequod, a sailing vessel leaving port in Nantucket. Unbeknownst to Ishmael and the mates, the Pequod s monomaniacal Captain Ahab is taking them all on a mad and personal mission to slay the great whale Moby Dick, an obsession that will open their eyes to the wonder and spectacle of man, of beast, and the inescapable nature of both.

Seul survivant d'un baleinier, Ismaël raconte l'acharnement passionné voire obsessionnel de son capitaine, à vouloir chasser à travers toutes les mers la baleine blanche, Moby Dick. En Nouvelle-Angleterre en 1814, le jeune Ismaël s'embarque à bord d'un baleinier. Il partage sa cabine avec Queequeg un harponneur, qui deviendra rapidement un ami. Il découvre peu à peu les moeurs rudes et le travail de l'équipage. Le capitaine Achab, obsédé par l'idée de chasser Moby Dick, terrorise l'équipage. Au cours d'une expédition, il a perdu une jambe et s'est juré de venir à bout du monstre marin. Après des mois de recherche de l'animal massif apparaît soudainement.
