En 1915, Rati rentre au royaume de Siam, après avoir passé plusieurs années en France. A son retour, il lui est demandé son aide pour enseigner le Français aux bureaucrates les plus fortunés, ce qu'il va alors accepter de faire pendant les six mois de son séjour. Durant cette période, il va alors rencontrer Thee. Héritier d'une famille riche, il va faire découvrir les mœurs et coutumes du pays au jeune étranger. Voyant leur rapprochement d'un mauvais œil, la famille de Thee fait alors tout son possible pour les séparer. Dech, un jeune homme issu d'une noble naissance, se retrouve confronté aux mêmes difficultés. Souhaitant se rapprocher de Mek, l'un de ses serviteurs pour qui il a des sentiments, il va se mettre à participer aux combats clandestins de la ville à l'insu de sa famille.
