Rei Kiriyama, 17 ans, est un adolescent plutôt marginal dont la vie entière semble tourner autour du shogi (échecs japonais). Extrêmement doué, il relève défi après défi, y compris contre des joueurs bien plus âgés que lui. Mais malgré ses nombreuses victoires, Rei se sent vide et n'arrive pas à trouver sa place. Sa vie va toutefois commencer à prendre une toute autre tournure suite à sa rencontre avec Akari, sa voisine, et des petites soeurs de cette dernière : Hinata et Momo.
