On an August night, a boat washes up on a beach in Palermo. On the sand lies the body of a woman: her face is disfigured, and she's holding a ponytail. Terio Mangiaracina and the fishermen are the only witnesses, and perhaps the perpetrators, of the crime. Mid-August is approaching, and as one of the most popular television programs claims, you can pick any culprit and talk about it again in September.

Terio's buxom sister Fana, a failed police officer who never misses a national mystery, is a fan of the TV show. She suggests preempting the official investigations and seeking the truth independently. Thus was born Mangiaracina Investigazioni, an illegal agency in the casual city style. The old majolica kitchen, the kingdom of her mother Assunta, was chosen as its headquarters.

La vittima era portiera di un'antica palazzina e anche una nota fattucchiera. Terio e Fana, fingendosi aspiranti portieri, si trasferiscono a lavorare lì. Ma al complicato delitto se ne aggiunge un altro, mentre Terio si perde in un amore che, a detta della sorella, gli toglie ogni lucidità. Per fortuna, il cugino carabiniere Nofrio, emigrato di ritorno a casa, lo aiuta.

Fra malocchi, tradimenti e vertigini amorose, tutto si complica. Terio riceve una brutta sorpresa, mentre gli indizi e le sensazioni sgangherate s'incastrano nella sua mente, anche grazie alla mamma Assunta, fino a fare arrivare l'improvvisato investigatore alla verità. Che non sarà dolce come sperava ma, per la sorella Fana, sarà l'inizio di una nuova carriera.
