Au début du vingtième siècle, au cœur de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts Saint-Thomas, prestigieuse école d’art londonienne, Lili Ichijoin fait ses premiers pas dans un univers où le talent se mêle aux ambitions naissantes. Passionnée par la peinture, la jeune femme ne dispose que de six mois pour atteindre la première place du classement de l’école, faute de quoi elle devra rentrer au Japon sur ordre de ses parents. Autour d’elle évolue une foule d’élèves venus de milieux très différents, chacun cherchant à trouver sa voie dans un monde en pleine mutation. Parmi eux se distingue Kit Church, un prodige issu d’une famille aristocratique, au caractère nonchalant et souvent source de problèmes. Tandis que Lili finit par le considérer comme son principal rival, Kit, jusque-là absorbé exclusivement par son art, se laisse peu à peu toucher par la sincérité et la détermination de la jeune femme…
