Épisode 1 - Little Mosque

Le révérend Magee, à court d'argent, loue la salle paroissiale de l'église anglicane de Mercy à Yasir Hamoudi, entrepreneur en bâtiment. Le but non avoué de Yasir, représentant de la communauté musulmane, est d'en faire une mosquée ! Le pot aux roses est découvert, bientôt relayé sur la radio locale par Fred Tupper. Entre-temps Baber prononce son dernier sermon car un nouvel imam, Amaar Rashid, est attendu à Mercy, et «retenu» à l'aéroport pour humour explosif... A peine arrivé, il est invité à se justifier sur les ondes auprès de ses fidèles et du révérend, bref, ses débuts sont délicats...

A la mosquée, la construction d'une barrière séparant hommes et femmes est controversée et suscite même une manifestation en ville, sur le thème «Musulmanes oppressées, brisez vos chaînes et libérez-vous !». Ann Popowicz, la dynamique mairesse, y récolte des fonds pour la future patinoire et constate que la barrière a été posée. Les fidèles s'entre-déchirent : chez lui Yasir est relégué au canapé, et Fred Tupper envenime la situation dans sa chronique réac' «Debout, tout le monde !"... Heureusement Amaar, en imam progressiste, trouve la solution. De son côté Baber est aux prises avec l'adolescence : il ne se résout pas à imposer le port du voile à sa fille Layla, pourtant jeune fille, qui se réjouit de participer au cross.

Amaar propose une opération portes ouvertes afin d'améliorer l'image de la communauté musulmane à Mercy, idée diversement reçue : Yasir y voit un afflux de clients potentiels, Baber ne veut pas de «croisés» dans sa mosquée, et Rayyan compte bien apporter sa contribution active en tant que femme, tout comme Fatima. Le jour J, chacun sa mission : Baber enseigne aux «sans-foi» les cinq piliers de l'islam, Fatima revisite l'histoire, Yasir fait de la retape pour son entreprise, la mairesse pour ses impôts, autour d'un joyeux banquet épicé. Mais Yasir n'a toujours pas réparé l'électricité...

Tandis que les "sorcelleries païennes" d'Halloween s'organisent, Baber renâcle à laisser sa fille y participer. Fatima et Rayyan rêvent d'un créneau piscine réservé aux femmes musulmanes. Pour obtenir gain de cause, une pétition est lancée dans Mercy. Sarah en est bien contrariée, et tente de saborder le projet, entrant en conflit avec Rayyan. Sur fond de salsa ondulant au-dessus du grand bassin, le mot de la fin sera : "Bougez ce que le Seigneur vous a donné !".

Quant à Sarah elle s'épuise à vouloir devenir dévote et s'est juré de prier cinq fois par jour ! Selon Barber luimême, Marlone est un fanatique qui ferait mieux de chercher la «voie de l'humilité». Les fidèles organisent à son intention une soirée décadente à souhait...

Personne ne s'émeut à l'idée de cette union sauf Baber, qui trouve un allié - et, qui sait, un ami ? - au sein des fidèles du révérend. Maman Hamoudi veut que son fils prenne une deuxième épouse. Yasir devra faire usage de faux pour contrecarrer cette idée fixe...

Où Rayyan apprend à composer entre ses sentiments et ce qui est autorisé à une jeune femme musulmane... Rayyan fait la connaissance de Jeff, pompier de son état, bienheureux de se faire soigner par la belle musulmane. Il se promet d'approfondir sa connaissance de l'islam... Les jeunes gens se recroisent fortuitement au café de Fatima et se «donnent en spectacle", selon Baber qui hurle à tout vent que Rayyan tenait les mains d'un infidèle. Cette dernière a beau nier, Sarah se réjouit de cette romance naissante entre sa fille et le garçon ; quant à Yasir, il est effondré. La vie privée de Rayyan devient l'info du jour à Mercy ! Amaar y va de son petit sermon sur le rôle de la femme musulmane, ce qui courrouce la fière doctoresse ; Baber pense envoyer sa fille Leila dans une école coranique pour filles, pour qu'elle ne suive pas l'exemple de Rayyan la débauchée. Mais Rayyan invite Jeff à dîner...

Le révérend Magee est catastrophé : l'archidiacre veut visiter sa paroisse, dans le but avoué de fermer une église désertée et qui coûte de l'argent au diocèse. Sarah ayant, par sa naissance, "joué dans les deux équipes", est désignée pour professer à Baber et consorts les bases de la religion anglicane. Ils seront figurants à l'office de Magee dimanche ! L'arrivée prématurée de l'archidiacre coupe court à tout enseignement. D'abord interloqué par la foule de fidèles, l'homme d'église découvre l'existence de la mosquée... et entend bien capter une partie du loyer

Rayyan, elle, se révèle naturellement douée, au point d'attirer la convoitise de ses adversaires.

Sarah feels undervalued by Ann and agrees to work for Darnelly’s Mayor, Glenda Beckford, not realizing that Ann’s college ‘frenemy’ has ulterior motives for hiring her. Meanwhile, Amaar is so consumed with his plans for the new Mosque, he manages to forget Rayyan’s birthday. Baber and Thorne compete for clients at the mosque/church’s last rummage sale.

And Sarah attempts to rejoin the church choir, with fiery results.

Charles returns to Mercy with a plan to win Ann. Sarah reaffirms her Muslim faith; and, with Mercy Anglican burnt to a crisp, Thorne finds an unexpected new home for his congregation.
