Huey et Riley Freeman, deux frères afro-américains, vivent avec leur grand-père Robert Freeman. Devenu riche, Robert Freeman décide de quitter Chicago pour une ville du Sud des États-Unis nommée Woodcrest. Ainsi Huey et Riley, vivant avec leur grand-père, quittent le ghetto de Chicago pour se retrouver dans une banlieue majoritairement blanche, riche et paisible. Le ton est totalement décalé, enchaînant des épisodes de pur divertissement et d'autres plus engagés politiquement, le propos intrinsèque est toujours présent et intéressant. L'idée même de la série était risqué, parler de la place des Afro-américains aux Etats-Unis et donner une vision des USA vu par des Afro-américains et non des blancs.
