À l'été 1997, Anna, une jeune femme naïve, déménage à Knutby pour faire partie de la congrégation de l'église libre en tant que nounou, ce qui lui semble être une communauté chaleureuse et pieuse. Mais bientôt l’idylle qui n’a jamais existé crépite, et la manipulation, les jeux de pouvoir, l’exclusion sociale, la pression de groupe, le lavage de cerveau, le fanatisme vont envahir son quotidien.
