Finissant par considérer la création du monde comme un échec, Dieu enleva aux hommes le droit de mourir et de se reproduire. Toutefois, en dernier espoir, il créa les fossoyeurs, les seuls êtres capables de donner le repos éternel à ceux qui le désirent. Après la mort de sa mère, Ai, à peine âgée de 12 ans, hérite de son statut et devient la fossoyeuse du village. Suivant la volonté des villageois, elle commence à creuser des tombes sans se douter que ces dernières seraient rapidement utilisées. En effet, à peine eut elle terminé qu'un étranger cherchant une femme nommée Anna extermina tous les habitants. À présent seule monde, Ai décide de le suivre afin de découvrir le vrai visage de ce monde qui se trouvera être encore plus sombre que ce qu'elle aurait pu imaginer. -Syaoran-
