Le 15 juillet 2043, « Infinite Dendrogram », un jeu de type Full Dive VRMMO avec un système unique appelé « Embryo » sort sur le marché. Il offre à chaque joueur un très grand choix, voire même un nombre illimité d’évolutions possibles. Ce jeu a conquis le monde en un rien de temps, car il possède un élément qui était jusque-là techniquement impossible à mettre en place. Mukudori Reiji, un jeune homme qui vient de passer ses examens d’entrée à l’université, décide d’emménager seul à Tokyo. Pour fêter la fin de cette longue période de révisions, il commence à jouer à « Infinite Dendrogram » sur les recommandations insistantes de son grand frère…
