En cette fin de mois de mars 1931, un vent glacial souffle sur Naples. Le théâtre royal San Carlo s'apprête à donner Cavalleria Rusticana et Paillasse avec le célèbre ténor Arnaldo Vezzi, artiste de renommée mondiale et ami du Duce. Mais le chanteur est retrouvé sans vie dans sa loge, la gorge tranchée par un fragment acéré de son miroir brisé. Chose étrange, alors que les murs sont éclaboussés de sang, le manteau et l'écharpe de l'artiste sont parfaitement propres. L'affaire est confiée au commissaire Ricciardi, peu apprécié par ses supérieurs en raison de son caractère et de ses méthodes atypiques, mais reconnu comme un enquêteur de valeur. Ce que peu de gens savent, c'est que le commissaire est un homme tourmenté, traumatisé par la vision d'un cadavre dans l'enfance... (D'après les romans de Maurizio de Giovanni).

Ricciardi dovrà scoprirlo, mentre nel privato, l’amore per Enrica lo mette di fronte alla necessità di confessare alla ragazza la sua maledizione.

Chiudere il caso è più urgente del solito, bisogna che Ricciardi si liberi in fretta perché il matrimonio con Enrica è alle porte.

Ma è stato davvero uno dei più grandi affetti di Ricciardi a macchiarsi di questo orribile crimine o niente è come sembra?
