This revolutionary awards show features the most popular songs and artists in the nation based on the iHeartRadio Chart, a ranking decided by what consumers listen to both on the radio and online. The inaugural special delivered a ton of thrilling, touching and memorable moments including Pitbull and GRL's opening number on a full-size yacht, music all-star tributes to Pharrell as he was presented with the Innovator Award, followed by a show-stopping performance of his greatest hits, Billy Ray Cyrus accepting the Best Lyrics award from Lionel Richie on behalf of his daughter Miley Cyrus, Usher performing a dance tribute to Michael Jackson with music off the King of Pop's new posthumous album "Xscape" and Rihanna winning the awards for Hip Hop/R&B Song of the Year, Best Fan Army and Artist of the Year! Next year promises to bring even more of the huge stars, fresh music and stunning surprises we all heart so much. From executive producers John Sykes and Tom Poleman of Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, Ryan Seacrest Productions, and Ian Stewart and Hamish Hamilton of Done and Dusted Inc., comes an awards show that gives the power to the people.

The 1st iHeartRadio Music Awards, was the inaugural music award show presented by iHeartMedia's platform iHeartRadio and NBC. The awards were held on May 1, 2014, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The awards show was announced on February 26, 2014. The nominations were compiled by the results of Mediabase charts, listener feedback and digital straming data from the iHeartRadio platform and announced on March 26, 2014. The awards recognized the biggest artists and songs of the year. The show was directed by Hamish Hamilton. The voting took place on iHeartRadio's official webpage except for the "Instagram Award", where voting took place on social network Instagram. Rihanna led the nominations with eight and also became the biggest winner of the night with four wins including Artist of the Year and Song of the Year.

The 2nd iHeartRadio Music Awards was the second music award show presented by iHeartMedia's platform iHeartRadio and NBC. The awards were held on March 29, 2015, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and were hosted by Jamie Foxx. Taylor Swift won three awards, including Artist of the Year and Song of the Year. Justin Timberlake was presented with the Innovator Award.

The 3rd iHeartRadio Music Awards was the third music award show presented by iHeartMedia's platform iHeartRadio and was televised live on TBS, TNT and truTV. The awards was held on April 3, 2016, at the The Forum in Inglewood, California, and was hosted by American singer Jason Derulo. Taylor Swift and The Weeknd led the nominations with seven categories, followed by Adele with five nominations. Both Swift and The Weeknd were also nominated for the inaugural Female and Male Artist of the Year categories (the previous two years featured simply Artist of the Year). Swift was the big winner of the night with four awards, including Best Tour and Album of the Year. Out of the 29 categories, the awards also feature 7 fan-voted categories including Best Fan Army, Best Lyrics and Best Collaboration, as well as four new categories: Best Cover Song, Best Song from a Movie, Biggest Triple Threat and Most Meme-Able Moment. Voting took place via the iHeartRadio website from February 9 through March 25, except for Fan Army and Meme-Able Moment, which continued through the evening of the awards on April 3.
