Alors que les lycéens s’inscrivent avec enthousiasme au club dans lequel ils vont pouvoir s’investir tout au long de l’année scolaire, Hôtarô, lui, est loin d’être motivé. Ce qu’il apprécie, c’est de faire un minimum d’efforts. Seulement, sur la demande de sa grande sœur qui a peur que le club de littérature dans lequel elle était inscrite quelques années auparavant ne soit dissout par manque de membres, Hôtarô accepte d’en faire partie, dans l’espoir d’en être l’unique participant. Quel n’est pas son désarroi lorsqu’il s’aperçoit qu’Eru Chitanda s’est également inscrite, d’autant plus que la lycéenne est de nature curieuse, et qu’elle n’a pas l’intention de laisser les mystères qui l’entourent sans réponse.

"Energy conservationist" Hotaro Oreki joins the Classic Lit Club at his high school at his sister's behest, to keep it from being shut down. Also joining the club are his best friend, Satoshi Fukube, and Eru Chitanda, a curious girl who enjoys mysteries.
