The revelation in 2017 that the late Dr. Karbaat clandestinely used his own semen to inseminate over 65 of his patients shocked the world. SEEDS OF DECEIT is a vivid portrayal of how that happened and how it haunts today those affected: the emotional trauma of coming to terms with a changed, uncertain genetic origin.

Épisode 1 - De Belofte
1 mars 2021
The first episode A PROMISE tells the story of how the late Dr. Karbaat became the most renowned fertility doctor in the Netherlands. At the time, Karbaat was regarded a progressive pioneer, as he not only helped heterosexual couples, but also gay couples and single mothers. Former patients, mothers of "Karbaat children", discuss their longstanding wish for a child, and how it made them close their eyes to an often horrific and unbearable insemination treatment, which in cases included sexual intimidation and even abuse. Decades later, Karbaat is sued based on the suspicion he used his own semen to inseminate his patients. A month before the trial, the doctor passes away.
Épisode 2 - De Nazaten
8 mars 2021
The second episode OFFSPRING shows how the Karbaat children deal with this newly gained genetic and emotional heritage once the news was out. The episode centers around the nature vs. nurture debate. The children meet each other for the first time and share conflicting feelings, on the one side experiencing belonging and recognition, while on the other, also fear of inheriting genetic family traits from their biological father. Two real-life family members of doctor Karbaat give us more insight on who Karbaat was as a person and talk about his background, upbringing and character.
Épisode 3 - Vloeibare Liefde
15 mars 2021
The third episode LIQUID LOVE tells the story behind the exceptional motivation of Karbaat's favorite sperm donor who yearned for immortality by producing over 200 donor children. Viewers learn that Karbaat was highly unselective with his donors and even worked with donors with genetic diseases. The first international Karbaat child is found and meets the group in the Netherlands. More and more cases of doctors inseminating their own semen have come and still come to light, making it a more prevalent event than one may have thought.
