Nous sommes en 1829. Nicolas Gogol, jeune fonctionnaire de la Troisième Section, souffre de violentes crises d’épilepsie et lutte pour continuer à travailler. Accidentellement témoin de l'une de ces crises, l’enquêteur Yakov Guro comprend que ses visions contiennent des indices qui pourraient aider à résoudre des crimes bien réels. Ensemble, les deux hommes entreprennent une enquête sur une affaire particulièrement étrange et déconcertante qui les amène au petit village de Dikanka, où chacun sembler avoir quelque chose à cacher.
