Le titre, George de la Jungle, est une parodie de l'histoire populaire de Tarzan. Le personnage de titre, George (exprimé par Bill Scott), est un "homme singe" à l'esprit vif mais au grand cœur qui vit dans la jungle. Il est appelé à chaque épisode pour sauver ses habitants de diverses menaces. Dans l'épisode teaser, il est célèbre pour ne pas regarder où il se balance et ainsi claquant le visage d'abord dans les arbres ou d'autres obstacles au son de "George, George, George de la jungle". L'intérêt amoureux de George est Ursula (exprimé par June Foray), auquel George se réfère comme «Fella». Il a un singe pour un ami, appelé de manière appropriée Ape (exprimé par Paul Frees), qui est beaucoup plus intelligent que George. Puis il y a Shep, l'éléphant de George qui agit comme un chien de tour, ou comme George l'appelle, "une grande poochie de cacahuètes." A noter également l'oiseau Tooky Tooky (ou Tookie Tookie) célèbre pour son appel: "Ah ah ee ee takey takey."
