It is 1905 and Luis Bernardo Valença, a thirty-seven-year-old bachelor and owner of a small shipping company, is revelling in Lisbon's luxurious high society. But his life is turned upside down when King Dom Carlos invites him to become governor of Portugal's smallest colony, the island of São Tomé e Principe.

Carlos is furious with his cousin King Edward VIII because the British under the cloak of a "hypocritical humanism" want to eliminate competition from Portuguese cocoa producers, claiming the illegal use of slave labor and encouraging boycotting purchase of São Tomé cacao; Luís Bernardo meets Matilde, his best friend's (João Forjaz) cousin and fall in love for her; David Jameson is a British governator in India and married with a beutiful wife, Ann Jameson

King D.Carlos reveals the accusation from British about illegal use of slaves in Portuguese colony of Sao Tome and Principe. So, the king propose to Luis the position of governator of this islands with the mission to prove this accusations are false. Luis receives another propose: a man want purchase his company. Luis and Matilde make love.

David Jameson admits him candlesticks theft from governor's house and he is fired of your position in India. However, was propose to him a position of British governator in Sao Tome and Principe islands and he accepts this position and the mission of it; Luis and Matilde meet again. Luis accepts the propose of the king and becomes the new Portuguese Governator of Sao Tome and Principe.

Luis disembarks in Sao Tome. The population of the island receives the new governor. Luis meets governator's palace, your new house and your employees: Sebastião, Sinhá, Tobias and Doroteia. Mr. Agostinho, general secretary of the government, presents to Luis the leading dignitaries of the island: Mr. Jerónimo Carvalho da Silva, mayor of the island; Anselmo de Sousa Teixeira, judge of the island; José de Atalaia, island's vicar; Benjamim das Neves, island's major; Sousa e Faro, administrator of one of the largest farm in the island; João Patrício, attorney; Dr. Gil, doctor; Germano Valente, island's custodian and José Faria, pharmacer of the island. David and Ann Jameson say farewell to India and their lives on that land.

Luis Bernardo Valença decides give a welcome prom for the leading dignitaries, administrators of the farms and their families. Luis starts explore the island and meet the population. The leading dignitaries talk behind Luis's back because they don't like his way of being.

During the prom, Luis Bernardo creates empathy with Maria Augusta and opens the first dance with her. The dignitaries of the island continue to criticize the actions of Luis Bernardo, which is not the case with the women of the island. Jaime dies of malaria.

Luis continues to visit the farms of São Tomé. He starts to know the reality of the farms employees. In his investigation, he discovers that employees of the farms don't know nothing about work's contract and some o them don't know write their names. Germano Valente refuses to coperate with Luis and he writes a letter to Lisbon telling about this and all he saw until now. Agostinho betray Luis and instead of send the letter to Lisbon, he read the letter and shows it to Germano Valente. Luis visits the farm Nova Esperança which is adminitrated by Maria Augusta da Trindade.

Luís Bernardo continues the visit to the farm "Nova Esperança". There, he knows a little more about Maria Augusta and his foreman Albano. Colonel Maltez tries to seduce Masara. Aristides pursues his boss Thomas to the abandoned New Brazil's farm. Luis Bernardo finishes the visit to the farm but Maria Augusta invites him to dinner and to spend the night in his house.

Luis organizes a dinner with the dignitaries of the island to introduce them to the English consul and his wife. David Jameson begins the visits to the farms with the company of Luis Bernardo. João Forjaz arrives in São Tomé.

The arrival of Joao to the island brought a happiness that Luis Bernardo didn't live long ago. Luis kisses Ann. Luis and João visit the island of the Principe and have the feeling that a slave revolt is planned.

Luis doubts the opinion he has about love since always. Luis and Ann are getting closer. Luis accompanies David to Nova Esperança farm. In a moment alone, Maria Augusta asks Luis to move away from David and Ann.

David notices that Luis is farther away. Five years later, the death of Maria Augusta's husband continues to be doubted by the inhabitants of the island. Ann reveals to Luís the reason that led her to live in Sao Tome. João confronts Maria Augusta about the death of her husband and asks Luis to return with him to Lisbon.

Luis and Ann make love. David makes a promise to Luis in case he proves to exist slavery in the islands of Sao Tome and Principe. Saturnino and Joanino flee from Rio do Ouro.

Luís Bernardo organizes a dinner to celebrate his first year as governor of the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe but few people appear in it. It's announced the visit of the royal prince Luís Filipe. Luis Bernardo is ill with malaria.

Luis remains seriously ill. However, as time passes, the Portuguese governor of São Tomé and Príncipe overcome malaria. David picks Ann out of Luis's house. David confronts Luis about the royal prince's visit to the islands and insinuates that he knows of Luis passion for his wife, Ann.

Luís disembarks in the island of Principe to finish the revolt of the slaves in the farm Infante D. Henrfique. Zé Maria argues with her father and accuses him of burning the cabin of Masara and Saturnino. David tells Luis that he will write what he suspects is happening: that there is, in fact, slavery in S. Tomé and Príncipe.

The royal prince arrives on the Island of Sao Tome and is greeted with joy by the people. The prince came accompanied by the minister who does not have great empathy with Luis Bernardo. Ann and Luís have sex during the prince's welcome banquet.

David Jameson talks to the minister without Luis. Luis accuses David of treason and David insinuates that Luis is nobody to speak of treason. After the royal visit Luis falls into a deep sadness and solitude. João believes that Luis will return to Lisbon soon.

Luis asks Ann to run away with him. Maria Augusta and Zé Maria meet with Colonel Maltez to discuss the future of Saturnino and Masara. Ann does not promise Luis to stay with him in the future. In an attempt to forget her, Luis asks Maria Augusta to spend the night with her.

The repatriation does not run as Luís Bernardo expected what causes even more tension between him and the dignitaries of the island. Ann surprises Luis. Luis finds himself without friends, without respect and without love.
