Un jour, déculotté par ses camarades d'Oxford, Paul Pennyfeather est injustement renvoyé de l'université d'Oxford après avoir été accusé d'attentat à la pudeur... Sans argent, sans avenir, le jeune homme obtient un poste de professeur dans une médiocre école publique du Pays de Galles. Son chemin croise alors celui d'une aristocrate, Margot Beste-Chetwynde, la mère d'un de ses élèves. C'est le début d'une histoire d'amour. Decline And Fall est une série adaptée du roman d'Evelyn Waugh: Grandeur et Décadence, publié en 1928, et qui se veut satire du monde aristocratique anglo-saxon des années 20.

There he meets a colourful cast of characters, including the alluring Margot Beste-Chetwynde, a wealthy widow with designs on the naeve Paul.
