Doctors at Antwerp's National Institute for Contagious Diseases discover a patient infected with a contagious and deadly disease, and the authorities take no chances and seal off the centre of the city for 48 hours to prevent further spreading of the virus. Lab assistant Jana, police officer Jokke, pregnant Ineke, teacher Katja and her class and the ambitious Dr Cannaerts are among those who find their lives turned upside down by the quarantine.

Katja makes a grisly discovery in a restricted area of the National Institute for Infectious Diseases, Lex is asked to attend a press conference held by the minister of public health at which Leo asks why 5,000 people are being contained after the death of just one person with flu like symptoms.

Quarantine has been prolonged and certain food products are starting to become scarce within the cordon. Lex starts organising food distribution via the container sluices. Leo has asked his friend Ingrid to provide a video diary from within the cordon, but soon realises the enormity of the tradegy unfolding when Ingrid films the death of her own girlfriend struck by the lethal virus.

Day 12 of the cordon, and the flimsy fabric of society is beginning to break down. Jokke is unable to prevent black marketeers taking over the distribution of food, and the situation is inflamed when Lommers takes the drastic action of blocking phone signals to the cordon. Katja is wondering when Dr Cannaerts is going to make public the deaths of two of his staff from the institute.

Day 16: Leo and Lex examine the CCTV footage from security cameras at the institute which Jokke has managed to smuggle out of the cordon via the sluice. Leo's suspicions are even further aroused when Lommers herself pays him a visit in an attempt to silence his 'Horseman' blog. An unfortunate encounter with a carrier of the virus by one of Katja's young charges leads to horrific consequences.

Thinking that she has found a refuge with her friend Melissa, Ineke suggests they try to find the lab that Jokke has told her about, but conditions at the F Tron offices are reaching breaking point.

While Nald is still alive and gets rescued from the sewer canal and tries to get rid of his evidence, director Lommers questions his motives and starts to see her authority fail when national security orders a new executive above her position. Tensions and emotions inside the cordon rise even further when a gang tries to escape with explosives...

Idriss wordt in mekaar geslagen door Mike en zijn kompanen, maar dat maakt zijn voornemen om met Jokke het cordon te zuiveren enkel sterker. Hij vindt een vreemde bondgenoot in de predikant en zijn volgelingen. Ineke, die hersenschade heeft geleden door het virus, wil haar dochtertje Ellie terughalen bij Micheline en Bert.

Wie twee keer negatief test mag over naar de transitzone, een tussenstation tussen het cordon en de buitenwereld. De personen die onbeslist testen, kunnen zich daar echter moeilijk bij neerleggen. Ondertussen misbruiken gevangenen de tests om te ontsnappen en hun buit naar buiten te smokkelen. Suzy wordt zwaar ontgoocheld in haar liefde voor Dennis. Nald ruikt zaakjes en passeert Lommers om chef beveiliging van de transitzone te worden. Dduizenden mensen betogen uit bezorgdheid tegen het openzetten van de transit: zij willen niet dat mensen uit het cordon terug binnen komen.

Het wordt verpleegster Cynthia stilaan duidelijk wat men met Tyl, die immuun was voor het virus, van plan is. De transitperiode loopt af en dus mogen de eerste mensen weldra uit het cordon. Maar de buitenwereld protesteert uit angst. Nald merkt te laat dat ook Jana zal worden vrijgelaten. De spanning is te snijden. En dan loopt het grondig mis...

Toon heeft de vrijlating uit de transitzone verknald van zij die slaagden voor de dubbeltest. De hele transit, tests incluis, moet dus opnieuw gebeuren. Jana beseft dat Nald haar wou uitschakelen, maar ze wil toch uit het cordon geraken om Lex' naam te zuiveren. Denise wil koste wat het kost haar kleindochter Ellie bij Micheline weghalen. Jokke is er slecht aan toe, en het ziet er naar uit dat hij ook Idriss besmet heeft.

Cynthia ontdekt dat Tyl wordt leeggetapt om van zijn bloed een onbetaalbaar vaccin te maken, dat enkel bestemd is voor de superrijken. Ze zet haar carrière op het spel om dit openbaar te maken. Ondertussen organiseert men een tweede poging om de sluizen open te zetten en de gezond verklaarde mensen die in de transitzone zaten, terug vrij te laten. Jana is doodsbang dat Nald haar zal spotten. De politie en de overheid hebben alles in het werk gesteld om een nieuw debacle te voorkomen. Er moet immers maar één zot zijn.

Nu dokter Cannaerts op de hoogte is van het bestaan van het wondergeneesmiddel NeoTyline dwingt hij een vaccin af voor zichzelf, in ruil om te zwijgen. Maar een diefstal in het NIIZA gooit roet in het eten. Wanneer Jokke en Idriss op zoek gaan naar de dieven, ontdekken ze vreemde praktijken. Ondertussen gaat Jana voluit om Lex' naam te zuiveren en Nald aan de schandpaal te nagelen. Wanneer Jana Duchamp aanklampt om de waarheid aan het licht te brengen, voelt ook Lommers zich bedreigd, die Nald in bescherming nam.

Op Jana heeft Nalds dreiging het omgekeerde effect. Ze gaat nog verbetener achter hem aan en begint zijn verleden uit te spitten. Suzy koestert argwaan wanneer Dennis zijn remmers niet komt ophalen. Tyl beseft dat hij niet de enige patiënt is in de beveiligde medische faciliteit. Lommers doet de onthulling van NeoTyline op de blog van The Horseman af als onzin en probeert ook Gryspeerts daarvan te overtuigen. Hij gaat echter achter de hacker van zijn blog aan om de waarheid te weten te komen. Een gevaarlijke onderneming, want Gryspeerts voelt de hete adem van Lommers en Nald in zijn nek.

Jana wil Nald koste wat het kost van zijn sokkel halen en daar is hij zich maar al te goed bewust van. Het virus zelf zorgt voor een onverwachte wending, die het cordon misschien overbodig maakt. Nald en Lommers panikeren, want als Cannaerts en Jokke buiten komen, komt de waarheid misschien ook buiten. Lommers stelt Nald een oplossing voor, die alle verbeelding tart.
