While some will quibble with the visual design of Cirque du Soleil (a mutant hybrid of a Renaissance harlequinade and the Vegas excess of Liberace or Siegfried and Roy), there's no arguing about the physical prowess of the performers; the acrobatic feats are simply astonishing. Cirque du Soleil: Cirque Reinvente (We Reinvent the Circus) features dazzling dexterity on tightropes, trapezes, bicycles, and the bodies of other performers; impeccable clowning; and a contortionist of truly inhuman flexibility who can walk upside down on her hands and knees in an uncannily spiderlike fashion. Though Cirque du Soleil's spectacle is best experienced live, these particular pieces translate surprisingly well to video.

In that show, the actors, as every human being actually, are born naked : they're the worms. As time goes on, they have to dress to adapt their new environment. They represent different social kinds before eventually getting to the ultimate step, the Baroque cast. Armed with a deeply perceptive vision of the world and sleeping under bridges, the Baroques, throughout the fable, reveal the countless contradictions of our civilization where imagination has not yet taken power. More than 110 costumes made with all kinds of materials (velvet, imitation leather, crystalline, jean...) have been created for the show.

It's a surrealistic celebration of music, dance, acrobatics and comedy. The audience is brought in a metaphoric journey which starts at the beginning of times. It's art in perpetual transfer shown by performances of Korean boards, Chinese mast, trapeze... This mystical journey's goal is the quest of the impossible by strength, elegance and humor. The troupe of 72 artists from 18 different countries perform its show permanently at the theatre of the Treasure Island hotel and casino in Las Vegas, designed especially for its needs. This show was set up by the usual team of creators features 65 artists from around the globe for a new original theatrical experience that goes beyond the imagination limits. We can't tell you more about the show in itself, the Cirque du Soleil being rather discrete about it...

Quidam is a more scripted show; it integrates performance and theatricality. This show offers audiences a variety of acts where high-calibre acrobatic performance goes hand-in-hand with the magnificent beauty of the aerial, high-flying, balancing and manipulation acts. It's a third millennium show where the human being has to adapt himself to new realities. Quidam, an ordinary person, at once confronted to rush, trainspotting, and loneliness : he's a streetwalker, a chap, a ""quidam"" : he comes, he goes, he lives... This is the story of a little girl who regrets to have seen it all already and makes her little insignificant world explode by her rage. She then finds herself in the Quidam universe, joined by a cheerful guy and another one more mysterious, who will try to woo her by offering her the mysterious, the weird, the scary. A original costume has been created for every of the characters. The music, whose inspiration varies from classic to modern, and keens the mood of the show.

Frac, a mime who is suffering from a severe bout of depression, happens to meet a troupe of circus entertainers and immediately falls in love with one of the stars, Giulietta. But while his affection for Giulietta and admiration for the performers gives him a new lease on life, Giulietta's father, the leader of the troupe, opposes the relationship and is determined to keep them apart. Meanwhile, Frac and Giulietta discover a gang of children who are held prisoner by a criminal leader who forces them to do his bidding, and they devise a plan to win the kids their freedom.

He is young, in a jungle setting, with two fanciful "instincts" guiding him as swooping bird-like acrobats initially menace, then delight. As an adolescent, he enters a desert, where a man spins a large cube of metal tubing. He leaves his instinct-guides behind, and enters a garden where two statues dance in a pond. As he watches their sensual acrobatics of love, he becomes a man. He is offered wealth (represented by a golden hat) by a devil figure. In a richly decorated room, a scruffy troupe of a dozen acrobats and a little girl reawaken the old man's youthful nature and love.

It's a mix of the occidental and the oriental circuses, horoscopes and symbols from both worlds, Dralion is a fusion between the dragon and the lion. Among other mixes, the one between man and nature is present. Those two elements have to come to harmony. Another principle of oriental philosophy... All the show is directed by magical laws which invite the audience to a journey through fantastic, allegoric and timeless fields. Music is also a fusion of occidental and oriental inspirations while any element of the set helps the artist to perform one of his show. Among those, a troupe of 35 Chinese artists and some clowns who look to create disorder through the whole show.

Épisode 6 - Kà

Kà is a show by Cirque du Soleil at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Created and directed by Robert Lepage, the show and the theater cost $220 million to develop. Kà is the first Cirque du Soleil production that deviates from the company's usual format—the production presents a more straightforward story, unlike the more abstract visuals presented by other Cirque productions. Kà begins with the stage set as a ship. The twins are returning home, and preparations are in motion for their arrival. The boat docks, and the entire royal family is united. The court celebrates the return of the twins by displaying fantastic feats in a pageant, while the twins each perform together on their flutes. Just as the celebration comes to a close, pandemonium erupts when the court is attacked by a group of archers. The twins watch in horror as their parents, The Emperor and Empress, are assassinated in front of their eyes. As the palace burns to the ground, the surviving members flee for their lives. Accompanied by their nursemaid, Twin Sister and Twin Brother attempt to escape to a boat that will take them to safety. However, the Twin Brother is left behind, shot down by an arrow. The Court Jester jumps off the boat to save the Twin Brother from his pending doom. The boat escapes, only to sink in a terrible storm. As a soft piano and cello duet plays, the Nursemaid drowns in the water. The Twin Sister dives into the depths to rescue her, and quickly swims to the surface with the Nursemaid in tow. As light returns, the stage is now the Archer's Den. The Chief Archer, the Evil Counselor and his men celebrate their victory from the destruction of the Imperial Palace. The Counselor's Son unveils his ultimate creation: a machine that "grinds bones with the magical ore to unleash the destructive power of fire." All Together Now is a feature-length documentary that chronicles the making of The Beatles and Cirque du Soleil collaboration project Love. The film details the story behind the unique partnership between The Beatles and Cirque du Soleil that resulted in the creation and launch of the Love stage show and the double Grammy-winning album of the same name. The film is dedicated to the memory of Neil Aspinall, a former assistant to the band and head of Apple Corps.

From the creators of the reality series Fire Within comes another look at the creation of a Cirque du Soleil production--in this case, the controversial and erotic Zumanity, which performs exclusively in Las Vegas. Lovesick follows four performers--drag MC Joey Arias (also seen in Mondo New York); an alarmingly muscular Cuban named Alex, who discovers his girlfriend is pregnant as he's in the midst of the show's development; British Laetitia, who keeps imagining her father's unhappy response to the show; and Canadian Jonel, who's soon to be married--if her fiance can make it across the border. As the documentary chronicles the bumpy and often abrasive process of Zumanity's creation, it delves into the strain the show puts on the performers' relationships, both because of the show's sexual content and the enormous commitment it requires. Viewers seeking titillation will probably be disappointed, as Lovesick only provides glimpses of Zumanity itself. But anyone interested in the interplay between on-stage and off in the lives of performers will find this documentary fascinating and wish it had only gone further into the dancers' psyches.
