Cette série de documentaires évoque le quotidien parfois dangereux d'enfants allant à l'école. Alors que ce moment de la journée correspond dans notre imaginaire à des trajets à pied plutôt brefs ou à l'utilisation de transports en commun, c'est ici une toute autre réalité qui est montrée. Dans certaines régions du monde, se rendre à l'école est une véritable aventure. Chaque volet suit l'itinéraire d'un enfant, parfois accompagné d'un de ses parents pour faire face à la dangerosité du chemin. Il arrive qu'un écolier doive mener une expédition longue de plusieurs jours pour arriver à son internat. Illustrés par des images exceptionnelles, ces documentaires montrent les différences étonnantes que recouvre une même expérience : aller à l'école.

Seule une nacelle montée sur un câble rouillé permet d’atteindre la rive opposée. Une fois arrivés, une autre menace les attend : l’autoroute et son trafic infernal...

À 6 heures, le jour se lève sur la savane kenyane. Moseka, 8 ans, veille depuis déjà deux heures sur les chèvres et les vaches appartenant à sa famille, avant de se mettre en route pour l'école. Commence alors une aventure des plus dangereuses : en chemin, le jeune garçon et ses camarades doivent prendre garde aux lions, hyènes, éléphants et autres animaux sauvages...

There are countless dangerous situations that make this way to school so unpredictable. But after four days it is over, they have reached their goal; the city of Leh and the school.

Vidal a douze ans et vit sur l'une des nombreuses îles artificielles que compte le lac Titicaca. Tous les matins, Vidal se met en route pour l'école à bord d'une barque en roseaux. Car son école, également bâtie sur une île, se trouve au beau milieu du lac, à environ deux heures de sa maison. Sous un soleil de plomb, le jeune garçon affronte courageusement les dangers d'une telle traversée et notamment l'après-midi, lorsqu'il rentre des cours et que le vent forme sur l'eau des vagues qui très vite alourdissent et menacent de faire chavirer sa frêle embarcation. Vidal pagaie durant deux heures pour l'aller, deux heures pour le retour lorsqu'il ne s'arrête pas pour capturer des oiseaux : car Vidal sait que sa famille compte sur lui pour poser des pièges lors de son trajet quotidien, offrant ainsi à tous la possibilité de manger de la viande. Mais Vidal veut devenir ingénieur et se réjouit chaque matin, malgré la fatigue et le danger, de retourner en classe et de retrouver ses amis qui, comme lui, naviguent seuls dès l'âge de 5 ans sur l'un des plus grands lacs du monde.

Siberia. Endless vastness – arctic temperatures. Even farther East than Japan and 5 000 kilometres north of Vladivostok lies Yakutia, the coldest Republik of Russia. Yakutsk is the capital of the Yakutia Republic and is located about 5100 kilometres east of Moscow. In the midst of it: Oimjakon. With its 500 residents the coldest inhabited place on earth. This village lies in a mountain valley on the upper reaches of the banks of the Indgirka River. One of the major reasons for the freezing temperatures is the great distance from the Atlantic Ocean and the humidity that the Ocean provides to a major part of the Northern Hemisphere. Masses of mountains shield Siberia against the warm air from the west and south, while in the opposite direction, the door to the Artic stands wide open. Thus in the winter, cold masses of air expand into the Siberian landscape completely unrestricted.

When the schoolchildren wake up to the first rays of sunshine, the temperature is already over 30 degrees Celsius. They live in the Danakil desert in northeast Ethiopia, near an active volcano, in a region that is the world’s hottest on average. Amongst these children are 6-year-old Looita and his sister Khadiga. Their route to school, which is many kilometres long, takes these children of the Afar tribe over jagged earth, over seemingly endless lengths, and every day they are confronted with much more than just the astounding heat.

Every morning, the three sisters Julia, Yulissa and Kenya climb into their dugout in order to row to school. They live on the east coast of Nicaragua, one of the world’s poorest countries, and the youngest of them has just turned five; the oldest is nine. They row across the Rio Escondido. Not only is it one of the largest rivers in the country, it is simultaneously one of the most dangerous routes to school. While they have to watch out for snakes lurking in the trees over the river, the three sisters also struggle against the current and must ensure the dugout does not fill up with water - because it has multiples holes and could sink at any minute. The daily journey – ashore and to water – to San Mariano’s small village school is an adventure almost unimaginable to us. Every time they undertake this trip, the children expose themselves to life-threatening dangers, all for the chance to have a better future.

The ice covering the river is treacherous and ever-changing in appearance. The 10-year-old nomadic boy rides his horse alone to school and each time must cross the frozen Tunkhel river in the north of Mongolia. For nomadic Mongolian girl Delgertsetseg, the route to school is equally difficult. What these two nomadic children have in common is their eager anticipation for the warm and ice-free spring, even though they have to overcome the hardships of this school route the day before the traditional Mongolian New Year.

They live in Papua New Guinea, an island nation in the Pacific Ocean, in the middle of one of the world’s largest rainforests. And some of them take a route to school which will blow your mind. Their journey in the so-called ‘Land of 1000 Rivers’ is a five-day one which leads the students through jungles, in which new and unique animals are continuously being discovered, and in whose branches the notorious green tree python lurks.. Their journey to school is too risky to tackle alone; that is why father Michael accompanies his son and niece on this adventure. They travel over one hundred kilometres, and on this trip the children fear nothing more than the large Takali river. It separates their home - the jungle - from modern civilisation, and has already claimed the lives of many who have attempted to cross it. It is more than just a walk to school – It is a test in the vast jungle. And not all of the students will reach their destination...

These children undertake their journey to school all by themselves. For up to four hours, they march through one of the most beautiful but also one of the most dangerous Mexican landscapes. Throughout this journey they all have only one goal in mind: to ultimately find a job in a city and lead a better life.

The children from Madibago in the southern Philippines have one of the most spectacular and dangerous ways to school in the world. Some walk alone through the jungle for hours, others risk their lives, in order to make it past a steep face of rock and boulders, overgrown with moss and tree roots. The weather can change suddenly in the Philippines. Thanks to the high humidity, short, heavy rain showers tend to be the rule – even in the dry season. And for Aible this means even greater danger on her way to and from school. The roots, the rocks, the soil – all becomes even more slippery than usual. But that doesn’t keep the children from chasing their dreams.

In northern Colombia, the landscape is marked by water and seemingly endless expanses. Every day, the children who live there face this rough, unpredictable wilderness – with just one goal in mind: making it to school. Because this is their chance to break out of poverty and create a better life. Like the ten year old Kendys and the other schoolchildren. For this, they subject themselves to a daily dose of danger. Some of them must cross a ramshackle bridge that could collapse at any moment. Like the ten year old Kendys and some other schoolchildren. One false step and they could drown or break their legs. The children face all this under tough conditions. The temperature is already 34 degrees Celsius in the morning, with humidity at 97 percent. In order to get closer to their wishes and dreams, each day these children carry not only a backpack, but also the fear – on one of the world’s most dangerous ways to school.

En Amazonie brésilienne, les enfants s'engagent chaque jour sur l'un des chemins d'école les plus dangereux du monde. La jungle dense est considérée comme l'une des régions les plus riches en biodiversité du monde et chaque jour, le groupe vit de nouvelles aventures dans les forêts inondées. Ils se mettent en route à pied et en bateau, car les lacs et les rivières sont les seules voies de communication ... Les sœurs Letizia (14 ans) et Alice (10 ans) vivent au milieu de la forêt tropicale, à la périphérie d'une petite communauté. Chaque jour, elles marchent avec Issak (10 ans) et Aline (10 ans), d'abord sur un sentier étroit à travers la jungle. Au bout du chemin, un canoë les attend. Sur les quatre enfants, un seul sait nager, mais il n'y a pas d'autre moyen de se rendre à l'école. Les quatre doivent pagayer sur près de cinq kilomètres à travers des forêts inondées. À tout moment, il peut y avoir des averses torrentielles, des tempêtes et des vagues de plusieurs mètres de haut...
