L'histoire se passe dans la Corée des années 30, lorsque le Japon occupe la Corée. Seon Woo Wan, dont le père pactise avec l'occupant, est un jeune maître d'une riche famille et est aussi un journaliste d'un magazine à scandale. De l'autre côté, on a Na Yeo Kyeong qui est la propriétaire d'une librairie, mais elle est surtout une femme fortement impliquée dans le mouvement d'indépendance des patriotes et s'habille encore avec un hangbok noir et blanc. Vient ensuite Lee Su Hyeon qui travaille à la police japonaise et fut ami avec Woo Wan mais suite à une affaire dans leur jeunesse, Woo Wan a une haine envers lui. Enfin vient Cha Song Ju qui est une courtisane ultra populaire en Corée mais semble cacher quelque chose également.
