Shin Kazama est un brillant pilote d'avion. Fiancé à Ryoko, la fille du patron de Yamato Airlines, il a toutes les qualités pour atteindre les sommets de la compagnie aérienne. Mais un jour, ivre d'avoir trop fêté sa promotion et influencé par son ami Satoru Kanzaki, il signe malgré lui un contrat de mercenaire avec la légion étrangère du royaume d'Asran. Et le voilà envoyé à la base militaire Area 88 pour se battre ! Hélas pour lui, il n'y a que trois manières de quitter cet enfer : honorer son contrat de trois ans, payer 1,500,000 dollars ou s'évader au risque de se faire exécuter. Commence alors un périple pour Shin et ces compagnons d'infortune afin de survivre...
