how to be successful charlie brown I realize this isn't a particularly original topic for a video, but I guess everything has been done already anyway, so why bother haha. Much like all my recent videos, I found myself falling down a rabbit hole of old comics. Like Sunday comics, not comic books. Calvin and Hobbes, Charlie Brown, etc. Most of them, to be honest, are pretty garbage. But there are a few that really stand the test of time. Of course, Calvin and Hobbes was already talked about by people much more talented than me, and rather than talk about Charlie Brown directly, I thought I would focus on one particular aspect. Charlie Brown, the character, is supposed to represent failure. Can't kick a football, can't fly a kite, can't talk to the red-haired girl. This got me thinking: What is success? Growing up, I thought that having a good job and having good money was successful. And, I guess that was the case for most people. But, with the internet taking over everyone's lives, now success is based on something completely different. Having money now makes you the bad guy, in a sense. You need to have tons of followers and retweets, no matter what your real life situation may be. By all accounts, I should feel successful. Going from homeless to living my current lifestyle took years of hard work. But, because I have so few subs/followers, it feels like nothing I do matters. Despite all my life/work experience, none of it has value unless the silent hand of the internet deems me worthy of worth. It's a very odd feeling. Anyway, my original mission with these videos was to see how far I could go using only Premiere. And, I think I reached the very edge with my Amy Schumer and Nestly videos. So, I am embarrassed to say, I finally started learning After Effects, as you can clearly see in this video. It was interesting, but didn't go where I thought it was going to go. The whole time I was watching, though, I couldn't help but be bothered by the "message" it was trying to convey. Obviously the show presents a real issue that should be talked about, but they way it goes it about it is. in my opinion, terrible. The line that really made me go "are you serious" was near the end when Clay says "It's my fault. I killed Hannah because I was afraid to love her" WHAT!? The show focuses so heavily on how we all need to be careful what we do and say, and I agree up to a point. Its true that what happens to you isn't your fault, but how you react to what happens to you is 100% your responsibility. Hannah never sought help until the end, she purposefully never talked to anyone or really tried to solve her problems. She just blamed everyone else, and then plots revenge against them by recording the tapes. In my opinion, the message of the show is a bad one for young people. It basically says "its everyone else's duty to make you happy". I knew the title was just basically clickbait, and everyone online said it was quite good, so I thought eh, why not. It turned out to be a lot better than I was anticipating, but not perfect. At any rate, I thought the most interesting part of the whole show was how well balanced it was. The "antagonists" weren't just straight white-supremacist stereotypes, Sam wasn't some all knowing flawless hero. Everyone was on a pretty even playing field. A nice change from the internet, where things are... different haha. I also liked how the show really dove into the idea of intent vs. action. I know pretty much every movie and TV show is about this is some way, but the whole point of the show, at least in my eyes, was about intentions and how they can be good, but you can still do bad things. But, like I said, there were a few parts that made no sense. That guy dies, and none of the main characters care at all. His death is the butt of a joke? Seriously? Anyway, I made this video BEFORE the Johnny Depp one. I'm working on something that, if it works out, could be pretty cool. It might totally fail, though. I tried to go back and touch up some of my old graphics/effects since I can do so much better now. Hope you don't mind. alien covenant blade runner 2049 video essay So, after watching the new Prison Break, the new Alien movie, and seeing trailers for the bajillion 80s movie reboots/continuations, I got to thinking that maybe the movies aren't actually the problem. I mean, sure, a lot of them aren't very good (and some are just terrible... I mean seriously Prison Break season 5 is a total joke... not that its even on the same level as Alien or Star Wars but that's beside the point...) Now that all of use who were kids in the 80s and 90s have money to spend (in theory), movie companies, TV studios, and game developers are scrambling to cash in on our nostalgia. I mean, its not all bad. Some reboots, remakes, or franchise updates have been quite good. (Star Wars The Force Awakens and Rogue One were pretty great) But, there are far more bad ones than good ones. (Fuller House, Girl Meets World, Indiana Jones... you get the idea) Really, its just the fact that our feelings of nostalgia are misplaced. We THINK these feelings come from the movie, the TV show, the video game. But actually, its from the time and place, what was happening in our lives, what was happening in the news, who your friends were, and so on. I thought back to what movies or TV shows still hold up from when I was a kid. So, I started watching some old Pixar movies. It struck me how movies like Toy Story or Up, or several other ones, really are "timeless". The story is just as good at 9 as it is at 29, just from a different perspective. Going back and watching Toy Story, for example, I see it completely differently. But, with almost all of Pixar's recent movies, that magic is completely gone. The stories and characters are flat, one dimensional cookie cutter, boring... pick any word you like. But, they sell toys, right? I mean, Pixar can do whatever they want, and making money is the main goal at the end of the day. But still, I wish we could get more movies like Up and Inside Out, and fewer Cars. (I mean, Cars, Cars 2, now Cars 3?! come on now...) You know what I mean? Anyway, for this video I went with something different. Trying to change things up now what then. Studio Ghibli Video Essay Hayao Miyazaki I know this video might sound kind of emo, but whatever it's my channel ;P I've been a really big fan of Studio Ghibli movies since I was really young. A lot of anime is kinda the same, at least to me, but Miyasaki movies have always been different. Most of the time, movies (especially anime) fall into tropes about character archetypes, dialog, story beats, etc. But, Studio Ghibli movies always seem so unique. Much like with Pixar movies, watching them back as an adult almost feels like you're watching a completely different movie. Ghibli movies particularly focus on the Japanese concept of 間　(ma) which is basically an empty space between two things. As I said in the video, I love the little parts were nothing is happening and time seems to stop. You can just appreciate the world they've built for what it is. These movies kind of remind me of feeling like a kid, when time was endless and every day was a self-contained adventure. Anyway, I saw this type of video once and wondered if I could figure out how to make it from scratch. Turns out it's actually really easy, just time consuming. I actually liked it more than I thought I would, but let's be honest... it's really cliche. Every possible trope you could think of is here in this show. The character archetypes, the plot twists, the melodrama. Ahh.. to be 16 again amirite? So I thought I would compare it to other shows and find exactly what it is that makes something a "teen drama". 1: Hot guy who has a totally benign secret and is totally stoic around everyone except for YOU 2: A bunch of girls who act cartoonishly 2D 3: Someone has a long lost sibling. Not sure why, but this is a thing for some reason. Although, I did really enjoy the 1940s/50s aesthetic. Definitely made it stand out from the rest. Anyway, I wanted to try using that 1950s style for the graphics. I know Archie Comics came out in the 1940s, but 1950s graphic design is MUCH more interesting. At least to me. But, work might get busier soon, so my future videos are probably going to get a little simpler. Like my Amy Schumer or Johnny Depp videos. I actually really liked the original Toby McGuire Spiderman back in 2002. The third one was kinda whatever, but it as a fun series. The Amazing Spiderman with Andrew Garfield, while really flawed, was still fun. Now with Spider-Man Homecoming, we have our third iteration. Only this time, Spiderman isn't a stand alone superhero. Now he has to fit into the Marvel Cinematic Avengers universe. And, in my opinion, Spiderman is worse for it. A lot of the depth and complexity of Spiderman that we saw in the previous movies is gone. The character himself just felt so... generic? I guess. Maybe that's because he is 15 now, maybe not. Also, the fact that he has his own Ironman suit really removed a lot of the tension and sense of danger. Early on, we know he can just pull out some new gadget, the AI will think of something, or Ironman himself will come and save the day. Just felt so... boring, I guess. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this video. Like I said in my previous videos, I have to go back to relatively simpler videos because there is a good chance my work will get busier. Master of None Video Essay I watch a lot of shows on Netflix, as you've probably noticed. Netflix shows are curated pretty well, thankfully, and there aren't many that are downright terrible. Some, in fact, are amazing. Master of None is one of these shows. I mentioned how the most powerful scenes are completely silent, or at least mostly silent, and I think that really makes the small beats and nuances really hit home. Of course there are montage scenes set to music in the show, but I don't really remember any of those. But, the deaf scene, the scene in the car, a several others I didn't mention, those have stayed with me for quite some time. I could gush about Master of None all day, but I'll just say I found it to be one of the best comedy dramas I've ever seen. Smart, Hilarious, Heart Wrenching, everything. If you haven't seen it and it looks even remotely interesting to you, just watch it. Anyway, I made this video about a month ago, but I never found the right time to post it. Épisode 21 - The biggest problem with "To The Bone"

To The Bone Video Essay Netflix has been trying to tackle the hard issues for a while, and I certainly appreciate that. With Dear White People, 13 Reasons Why, and now To The Bone, we see them trying to shine a light on topics that most people wouldn't touch. But, they sorta come up short in a lot of ways. The movie mentions magazines and media portrayals, but the limited info we get from the movie about why Ellen or Luke have their issues has nothing to do with magazines or whatever. The movie kind of counters its own point... unless that WAS the point, in which case they just kind of glossed over it. The fact that Ellen is in a house full of girls and we NEVER learn about them, their stories/past or anything really ruins the message I think To The Bone was going for. Ellen's case on its own is rather extreme and, I would assume, not too relatable for most people. As for the part at end, of course I'm not saying I know what its like because "Waahh I used to be fat". The point I was making was that the movie ends with "Ellen's Mom is nice to her and now her issues are gone". But, this is a life long struggle that she is going to have. Even me, with my very, very light experience, still have these issues some 12 years later. Why American adaptations of Japanese anime will ALWAYS be terrible The idea of having a live action Hollywood version of anime like Death Note, Ghost in the Shell, Naruto, Cowboy Bebop, etc, always sounds good in theory. But, as we've seen several times now.. it just isn't going to work. Why? I'm sure there are a lot of theories and reasons, but a big one I wanted to touch on in this video was the fact the, fundamentally speaking, the way the west and the east, typically, tell their stories is very different. So, when trying to translate them back and forth, there is something, or sometimes like Death Note, everything, lost. The east approaches their main characters similar to myths, whereas, especially recently, the west focuses on the underdog having to overcome an impossible obstacle. Also, the focus on external vs internal is a big difference I noticed. Anime usually, though not always, have something personal that the main character is going through. In the west, usually but not always, the external struggle IS the story, with personal stuff just kind of tacked on for good measure. As I said, of course there are exceptions to west/vs east in storytelling. How the internet killed creativity video essay The internet has given us some really great things. From online video and music, to 24/7 news, there is a lot to love. But, at the same time, with so many voices all begging for attention, the only way to really get any traction is to fit into these formulas that have developed over the years. Videos have to be a certain way, music has to have these chords in this order, jokes have to have this punchline, etc. In the early days, people just did whatever they wanted. And we got... well, a lot of trash, but also a lot of great stuff as well. Those days are over, unfortunately. Everyone wants more content, faster, and the only way to keep up is with the aforementioned formulaic content. This video was a kind of experiment for me. I wanted to make an entire video in After effects with no cuts. Some of the camera movements could be better, but I ran out of time. Sorry. I'll do better next time.
