Nous suivons le quotidien de Ayumu Tanaka, un étudiant de première année, et de sa senpai, Urushi Yaotome, tous deux membres du club de Shogi de leur école ! Si Ayumu a rejoint ce club, c’est pour une raison bien précise : il s’est fait la promesse de dévoiler ses sentiments amoureux à Urushi si, et seulement si, il parvient à la battre dans une partie de Shogi. Toutefois, le jeune homme n’est encore qu’un simple débutant à ce jeu et il ne fait clairement pas le poids face à elle. Qu’à cela ne tienne !
